Indian nonviolent marchers pressed into Portuguese Goa and Diu causing at least nine deaths and dozens of injuries. Reports conflict on turnout with estimates from 2,000 to 100,000 as guards fire to repel crossings across the border near Vapi and Terekhol Fort.
Gordon S. Jaeck of Minneapolis resigns as chairman of the State Board of Parole effective September 15. Secretary Thomas Hughes says Jaeck plans to move into correctional education and continue in his grafted work, noting the governor will support an employee seeking better professional prospects.
Swedish scientist Prof. L Ehrenberg told the atoms for peace conference that atomic energy may lift agriculture by mutating barley and other grains to increase yield and improve grain size baking quality protein and oil content and maturation cycles. Baltimore crane operator John W. Calvert, 47, stepped outside to clear debris at a storm drain mouth when floodwaters pulled him feet first into a two foot wide pipe. Seconds later he surfaced in a 10 foot pool 180 feet away with head gash and severe bruises, refusing hospitalization. He said he saw the face of death.

Two Minnesota teenagers perished in separate weekend crashes. Lemoine Nordquist 16 Hoffman was killed when her pickup rolled on a county road northeast of Grant County village. Theodore M Hughes 18 Wayzata died when his car left a curve south of New Germany and overturned. Passenger Robert Giese 25 Excelsior was hospitalized with non serious injuries.
The House Un American Activities Committee opened a New York hearing with actors Stanley Prager John Randolph and George Tyne refusing to answer questions about Communist ties. Prager and Randolph cited the First and Fifth Amendments Tyne argued the committee has no right to invade inner beliefs.
