Peace envoys from Russia and Japan posted no progress in talks at Portsmouth on Sunday and Monday, with opponents clinging to indemnity and Sakhalin terms. Analysts warn of a possible impasse as outside influences push delays while Korea remains central to the dispute.
Daily Telegraph Japan correspondent in Moji reports General Lineviteh changing tactics to deceive Field Marshal Oyama. Prisoners claim Lineviteh asks for reinforcements but cannot hold the line to Vladivostok. Japanese patrol Kamchatka and the Okhotsk coast. Tokyo believes a Japanese flag near Biberta will shift M Witte at the peace conference.
Chicago police report James E. Daley a bartender shot and killed his wife at 383 West Van Buren Street after an argument over his attentions to other women. The couple’s eighteen month old daughter witnessed the killing and Daley was arrested nearby as a crowd threatened to lynch him.
In Christiania on Sunday Norway endorsed dissolution of the union with Sweden with remarkable unanimity. Of 450,000 voters 95,985 cast ballots for dissolution with 37 against and about one in 3,900 opposing the move. Women signed petitions as crowds celebrated. The lot will proceed with further steps on August 21.
President Roosevelt has not decided whether to call an extraordinary session next November. Indications favor no session this year as pressure to avoid an extra session grows. He plans to return to Washington in September to decide, with some urging against the move.
In South Glastonbury Connecticut on August 14 Columbo Serrias attempted a river rescue for his wife but was overwhelmed by her death grip. They both sank to the river bottom and died.
Washington reports that exports by manufacturers in the just ended fiscal year reached a record 543,620,297 dollars, up from 452,415,921 dollars the prior year.
Rev Dernard Schulte and his wife of New York were attacked at Mechanisville by a man who was later shot and killed in Saratoga while resisting arrest. The clergyman and his wife are in precarious condition. The assailant, William Curtis, fled and was killed after being pursued by police.
Shanghai correspondent reports that the governor of Newchwang has warned boycotters of American goods that their action is punishable by death. The anti-American boycott is taking on a political character amid fears of an antiforeign outbreak. Only Northern Chinese authorities are sternly repressing the movement.
New Orleans report shows yellow fever to 6 p.m. Sunday with 60 new cases, 963 total, 12 new deaths and 154 total deaths. Sub-foci rise by 14, total 202, with 343 cases under treatment.
Stevens Point Wisconsin August 14 James J Cone aged seventy died after a weeklong illness from brain inflammation caused by acute indigestion He was the sole owner of the Ophir mine at Anaconda and was commonly rated a millionaire.
Cleveland report says Earl Kiser, the auto racer who lost a leg in a Glenville track accident, is resting well in hospital and expected to recover.
A report from Tokio on August 14 says Russian forces are withdrawing across the Tumen River into Northern Korea to avoid battle. Confirmation could not be obtained.
A colossal landslide near Spencer's Bridge, west of Ashcroft, B C, swept the Thompson River, flooding the Indian village and sending a ten to fifteen foot wave downstream. Fifteen Indians reported missing and twelve injured. Doctors dispatched from Kamloops and Ashcroft.
From St Petersburg reports on the Portsmouth talks note M Witte's messages are known to few officials but spark hopeful views. Officials say Witte's reply was not entirely unacceptable to Japan and the emperor has not summoned a ministers council, signaling continued discussions without rupture.
After threatening to kill his family, Adam Boyer, an engineer for Cleveland Stone, shot and killed his wife and fired at his three eldest children on a street in Perea Aug 14. He escaped in a stone quarry as town authorities, led by Mayor Harting, closed in to hunt him.
