Dr. Fridtjof Nansen and Lt. Schotthausen abandon the Fram on the Franz Josef land route after 1895 Arctic drift. The expedition reports Nansen touched 86 degrees north enhancing prior records though not reaching the pole. Fram carried supplies for Jackson-Harmsworth. no crew illnesses reported.
Washington reports relief from heat as the weather bureau predicts cooler air in the Upper Mississippi and Ohio valleys and a noticeable fall in temperature reaching the seaboard. The Middle states did not see readings reach 90, while the Atlantic coast experienced reductions of three to four degrees in maximum temperatures.
The city recorded nine heat related deaths on August 14 as temperatures rose to 92 degrees between 2 and 3 pm and then cooled to 71 during an evening thunderstorm, totaling nine fatalities for the current heat period.
In Philadelphia on August 14 the thermometer hit 94 at 1 30 PM. A light evening breeze and a brief shower followed cooling the city. The heat caused eleven deaths to be reported.
Three masked men on horseback rode into Montpelier Idaho striking the Bank of Montpelier around 5 pm. They forced six men outside to enter the bank and, with revolvers, emptied cash into sacks. A posse of 30 pursued the bandits 80 minutes behind. Authorities withhold the exact haul.
Denver dispatch reports trains resumed service on the Colorado Central after a July 24 cloudburst washed away six miles of track and made six more miles impassable. A new path was blasted through solid rock in several canyon sections to restore passage.
Robert Seely aged 15 was killed instantly when he fell from a railroad trestle while attempting to cross in front of a train. Several companions with him narrowly escaped injury in the incident at Ashland Wisconsin.
A 150 horsepower boiler exploded at the Louisville Brick and Tile works near Maximo in Alliance, Ohio, blasting the building apart. One worker was killed and several others injured in the blast.
Des Moines reports Mrs. O E Pearson widow of a photographer killed after being pushed from a stair landing has filed suit against Henry C and Charles Wilcox for 25000 damages. The grand jury earlier ruled the death accidental.
In Three Rivers on August 14 the Republican congressional convention ended a deadlock as N B Hamilton of Niles secured the nomination on the 846th ballot amid party tension and delayed results.
Washington reports a Minnesota town would become Beau Falls if approved. An application to rename Thief River Falls in Polk County has already been submitted.
Racine Wisconsin August 14 George Rit ter assaulted his wife who was suing for a divorce causing injuries from which she cannot recover Jealousy was the motive in the incident.
In London on August 14 the Home Secretary Sir Matthew White Ridley announced that after medical review four Irish prisoners Daly Delaney Gallagher and Whitehead are to be released on license. They had been jailed for conspiracy linked to dynamite attacks during the 1883 84 scares. American citizens Dr Thomas Gallagher and Albert George Whitehead were jailed in London in 1888 and given life terms. Daly was arrested April 15 1884 with bombs. Delaney and others were held in Glasgow in 1883 with life sentences.
Railroads will sell encampment round trip tickets at one fare from points within 250 miles of St Paul. Half fare tickets will be available for trains arriving Aug 31 and Sept 1 2. The change eases travel for residents of Wisconsin Minnesota the Dakotas and Northern Iowa.
The state weather and crop bureau reports harvesting of small grain is nearly finished in the south and central counties, with progress in the north. Wheat and oats show good yields in many areas, corn advances with high nighttime temperatures boosting development, though some localities report weaker oats.
Survivors of the One Hundred and Fourth regiment O V Y L I and their families arrived in Canton after a Massillon reunion to greet Governor McKinley on his residence porch. Mrs McKinley Tent No 1 Daughters of Veterans from Massillon joined the visitors. Nearly 400 attended as Colonel William Monahan of Youngstown spoke and McKinley replied with a brief address.
Tom Cooper captured the 2 mile national championship at Fountain Ferry park in 4 26 8 5 seconds, the fastest race of the year, beating Arthur Gardner. The meet opened with the mile open professional won by Butler, drawn by a crowd of about 5,000 under mild conditions.
Wholesale liquor dealers from across the country will meet in Cleveland on August 31 to form a national association. They expect to represent about 100000000 dollars in capital and aim to devise plans to prevent whisky overproduction after five years of rising output and shrinking consumption.
The executive committee has sent the official call for the national convention to every national committee member in Indianapolis. Each member is instructed to wire the committee the names of delegates as soon as they are chosen.

In Ellensburg Washington on August 4 the Democratic Populist and Republican free silver conventions met all day but could not reach a fusion plan. Committees were chosen to pursue a fusion agreement and report soon while local matters were discussed.
In Alexandria Minnesota at about 530 PM three masked men forced entry into the Eliason residence. John Eliason was knocked down and his son arrived with a gun. The son shot the guard, killing him, while the other two suspects fled the scene.
Western League scores show Milwaukee 2 Kansas City 1, Detroit 8 Columbus 4, Grand Rapids 4 Indianapolis 0. Indianapolis leads with .609, others follow. National League results list Brooklyn 5 Baltimore 2 and 8 19 in two games, New York 10 Boston 7, Chicago 0 Cincinnati 7, Philadelphia 7 Washington 6 with Baltimore leading at .688 and Cincinnati at .687.
Sir John Millais president of the Royal Academy died in London at 1 30 pm. His end was painless. The queen and other royals sent condolences while editorials lament the loss and note the Royal Academy faces a difficult succession. Messages came from Europe and America.
In Colorado two rival Republican state committees claim to represent the party. One set calls a Sept 9 convention in Denver and another Sept 30 in Colorado Springs. The split follows a July 25 meeting where Wolcott supporters gained influence and a new chairman was elected.
A Lake Shore line washout near Otis Indiana collapsed 70 feet long and 30 feet deep at 4 am. The eastbound mail train plunged into the hole killing Engineer James Griffin and Fireman Michael Roach. Passengers escaped through the sleeper and none others were injured. A cloudburst caused the flood that created the washout.
The British yacht Valkyrie ITI from New York reached the Clyde on July 15. The American Philatelic Association hosts a convention at Hotel Lafayette, Lake Minnetonka. Third Minnesota Democrats nominate H. J. Peck of Shakopee. Floods devastate parts of China with towns submerged. Celia Rose, 24, jailed at Mansfield Ohio for poisoning her father mother and brother.
Milwaukee August 14 The morning session of the supreme grove of Druids adopted bylaws changes unifying rules for all subordinate and state bodies under a single set of laws after years of consideration.
