Telegraph operators in New York join a nationwide strike affecting Western Union, Postal Telegraph, and the Associated Press. Disputes over wages and staffing limit routine service while some offices maintain partial news flow to cities coast to coast, with leadership arranging continued operation.
In Chicago on August 13 telegraph operators walked out across the East and West. The major action hit New York with Western Union and Postal operators quitting. Additional strikes occurred in Montgomery Savannah Augusta Des Moines Chattanooga Cleveland Buffalo Baltimore Toledo Columbia N C Columbus O Denver Los Angeles Salt Lake City Philadelphia and Washington. Arbitration was rejected by company leaders while unions urged continued solidarity as the national situation developed.
The telegraph operators union votes to strike if demands are not met, with Samuel Gompers arriving to help. Western Union and Postal officials report business improving but cite plug-pulling incidents. Arbitration talks begin with Commissioner Neill and Ralph Neill overseeing negotiations.
Chicago and other hubs report a strike by AP telegraph operators on the South and Western circuits. Wires were shut down at 7:30 PM after a failure to agree on reduced hours and increased waves, with some cities like St Joseph Milwaukee Cleveland and Detroit remaining on duty while others joined or prepared to join the walkout.
In Falls and Grosvenor districts rioters pelted cavalry with stones, smashed doors and torched street lamps as streets torn up for missiles. About fifty injured, split roughly between troops and rioters, none dead. Troops remain on duty to deter further attacks.
New York stocks opened with broad selling that wiped out most gains. Pacific group led losses with Northern Pacific down about five points. Canadian Pacific Union Pacific and Missouri Pacific fell 3 or more. Heavy declines also hit Baltimore and Ohio Louisville and Nashville and Southern Pacific. industrials like Anaconda Consolidated Gas American Smelting and Colorado Fuel slid 2 to 4 points.
A judge delegated Lincoln to hear a guardianship matter. Lincoln challenged an auditor’s verdict, noting the guardian spent 28 dollars on a suit for his ward as a supposed necessary expense. He stated he had never owned such an expensive garment, calling the expenditure extravagant.

La Crosse Wisconsin reports a tornado Sunday morning caused about 500000 dollars in city damage with the Segelke and Kohlhaus Manufacturing Company and Michel Brewing Company among top losers. West Avenue Methodist church and a brick yard suffered major losses while crops were stripped, with country damages estimated at 200000 dollars. No lives were lost.
Ottumwa prominent merchant and former mayor Frank Dungan shot and killed his father in law George Godfrey in their west end home then shot himself. Godfrey, about eighty four, was wealthy and had financed Dungan's earlier dry goods venture. Dungan, about sixty, ran a grocery store and lived with Godfrey who had lived there for years. The motive is unknown, Dungan may have died in a temporary frenzy after illness.
United States District Attorney Stimson filed a petition in federal circuit court demanding E. H. Harriman and Otto H. Kuhn appear to answer questions tied to control of the Chicago and Alton railroad. The queries involve Union Pacific purchases and related stock dealings, with Harriman and Kuhn declining to answer at prior hearings. The matter is set for return before Judge Lacombe on October 21.
Seoul reports the Korean supreme court has condemned Yi Sang Sil to hang and Yi Wi Chow along with Yi Chen to life imprisonment for the Hague mission. Prince Yi, nephew to Korea’s new emperor, says he condemns traitorous Koreans who aided the Japanese and will not return to Korea to face execution. In Fargo a Pelican Rapids man died after jumping from a bridge, paralyzing him. Memphis reports several deaths from extreme heat in the region.
A Washington report states the Chicago and Alton railroad received immunity related to illegal rebates linked to Standard Oil of Indiana which was fined 29 240 000. The move coincides with Attorney General Gal Bona parte returning to Washington and plans for criminal anti trust prosecutions. Former Attorney General Moocy directed cases that used the Alton to obtain indictments, with Special Counsel Morrison promising immunity in exchange for information.
Tangier Aug 13 Caid Sir Harry Maclean has been handed over by his captor the bandit Raisuli to the Elkmes tribe who set him at liberty. Sandstone Minn Aug 13 Sam Hillman a young man working near Nickerson was badly cut with a knife in the hands of Henry Nyquist a fellow workman He was brought to Sandstone for medical attendance and is in a very critical condition Nyquist was arrested He pleaded guilty to a charge of assault with a dangerous weapon before Justice Gunn and was held to await the action of the grand jury in September.
Des Moines reports every union operator for Western Union and Postal Telegraph has walked out in sympathy with strikers. Telegraph service is crippled as only two men staff Western Union, the manager and assistant, while Postal handles five office forces working the instruments.
