Elks Elect Officers At Salt Lake Grand Lodge Session

Utah and Salt Lake City welcomed about 12 000 visiting Elks for the grand lodge reunion at the Mormon tabernacle. Judge O W Powers and Governor Heber M Wells led the welcome as the assembly examined reports and elected grand officers including George A Cronk Omaha as grand exalted ruler. The organization reported about 125 000 members across 805 lodges with a gain of roughly 26 000 members in the year.

Death of Judge A B Pattison Noted Colorado Jurist

Kansas City reports the death of C. L. Dobson a renowned lawyer ex judge of the state circuit court and authority on corporation law from injuries after a fall at his residence. Born in Harrison County West Virginia in 1848 he leaves a legacy in legal circles.

Steamer Soo City Survives Rough Sea Tow Reaches City

The Soo City of the Gatham and Marion line was stranded for hours in heavy seas with a broken propeller shaft. After a six hour delay and a perilous six hour voyage, a tow brought the vessel to Chicago with 200 passengers nearly panicked but safe. In Cripple Creek a strike of 2606 carries 4060 ounces of silver and a copper content near one percent was made by Bulbill at a depth of 1266 feet, supporting predictions that deep mining will alter the district's output.

St Louis Exposition to issue Jefferson and McKinley gold dollars

The Louisiana Purchase Exposition will mint 250000 gold dollars as souvenirs with half bearing Thomas Jefferson and half William McKinley. Secretary Shaw says coinage will take at least six months and initial certificates may be issued for the first fifty or one hundred coins.

John W. Gates is slated to become a prominent director of the United States Realty and Construction company, the newly incorporated outfit dubbed the billion dollar corporation. The firm is said to possess powers to deal in real estate and to build, sell, and take over railroads, steamships, mines, rights of way, franchises, and all kinds of industrial property.

Cholera Spreads From Manila to Japan and China

Victoria reports cholera from Manila and Chinese ports reaching Japan. Fukuoka Ken records 121 cases by July 16 with 93 deaths. Tientsin through July 14 shows 1,004 cases and 764 deaths. Northern districts total 1,015 cases and 593 deaths. Epidemic is abating.

Restoration of Tientsin Gains Chinese Appreciation

Yuan Shai Kai governor of Pechili province visited United States Minister Conger and thanked him for American efforts toward restoring Tientsin to the Chinese on reasonable terms. He said the Chinese government acknowledged that U S influence made the restoration possible.

Highwaymen Loot Chickasaw Region Transported Victims

Four outlaws held up ten vehicles near Chickasaw L T in August. They robbed occupants of more than 100 dollars, watches and valuables, then forced all to stand together at gunpoint until the highwaymen disappeared. Several prominent Chickasaw men were among the victims.

Birth of quadruplets in Shakopee ends in infant deaths

Mrs. Schmogel in Shakopee Minnesota on August 13 gave birth to four boys, but the babies died two hours after birth.
