Pearl Harbor warning linked to Soviet spy ring testimony

Mitsusada Yoshikawa testified that Soviet spy ring head Richard Sorge alerted Moscow in October 1941 as U S Japan peace talks stalled. Maj Gen Willoughby described efforts to unmask the ring and named Guenther Stein and Agnes Smedley as alleged members. He said the War Department and Royall blocked publication of the related report.

Beer Delivery Ban Opposed by Local Liquor Groups

Fashion Revue of 4-H Girls Friday

The 4-H fashion revue, featuring dresses by club home economy projects, will be staged Friday at 1 30 p m in the 4-H building announced Miss Nettie Neubold home agent. Winners receive state fair trips and Miss Mower County will be crowned. A second program with oral demonstrations will follow Saturday at 1 15 p m in the 4-H building.

Flood Claims Nineteen Lives Across Como Italy

In Italy heavy rains for 36 hours caused floods killing at least 19 people. Seventeen deaths occurred when the Comasodike burst sending a wall of water into Gera Lazio. Swiss cantons near Lake Como also reported fatalities as the region reels from the disaster.

Dutch Baby Best of Breed at Rabbit Show

A Dutch baby rabbit won best of breed at the Mower fair rabbit show with 31 entries across 14 breeds totaling 208 animals. The event featured Rex fur varieties, Checkered Giants, and four New Zealand varieties, judged by J. E. Mace with 4-H entries also present, marking a 25 percent yearly growth in rabbits shown.

Japanese War Orphan May Find U S Home in Roanoke Couple

A 3 year old Japanese American orphan named Mike could become the foster son of Sgt. Jack R. Terry and his wife Carolyn of Roanoke Virginia after the House passed a bill authorizing the placement The Senate and the President must approve. Mike was born in Japan to an American soldier and a Japanese mother and was raised in a Japanese orphanage.

Amy Weseman Wins Again With Lambs at Mower County Fair

Amy Weseman of North Star 4-H captures top lamb honors for the fifth straight year at Mower County Fair. She wins first in her trio and ewe and Southdown wether categories, with others earning state fair and Junior Livestock Show trips. Swine winners include Duane Wuertz and Myron Dammann, with Frank Richards earning the Swine Showmanship award. Judging continues for beef, dairy, and other sheep classes as about 50 pens compete in the lamb show.
