A Berlin dispatch reported in London that King Oscar has shifted his stance on the Norwegian throne. He now favors placing one of his sons on the throne, a change attributed to Emperor William’s influence and his securing Danish King Christian’s support.
Washington reports immediate active control of the yellow fever situation in New Orleans by the United States public health and marine hospital service. Surgeon J. H. White in New Orleans will begin the work with federal officers already assigned and pledged citizen cooperation and funding to meet service requirements.
A grand parade in Manila on August 7 honors Secretary of War Taft and party. About ten thousand in line including military personnel, marines, sailors, industrials, and thirty provincial delegations with fifty floats and eighty bands. Taft, Wright, Corbin, Admiral Train, Miss Alice Roosevelt attended reviewing stand. a gold plate was presented to Miss Roosevelt. The evening included sugar interests talks and a reception at Malecana palace.
In Crenshaw, a mining village near Dubois Pa, a Sunday thunderstorm struck the Pittsburg Shawmut and Northern freight station between 3 and 4 pm injuring five young men. Joseph Hire, 20, was killed instantly. Steve Rendus, 18, fatally injured. Leonard Seckard Gilbert Short and Frank Maloney seriously hurt. The station suffered heavy damage but not total destruction.
In Cumberland Wyoming on August 7 two men were killed and six others injured at Union Pacific Coal Mine No 1. The dead are Joseph Anderson and James Sellers. Seriously hurt were Joseph Corrigan Frank Sabella Thomas Evans John Miller and William Wilcox. Three others were lightly injured. All injured were rushed by special train to Rock Springs hospital after a section of coal fell from above as workers began shoveling ore into cars.
In Greensburg Indiana on August 7 two affluent farmers John Stevenson aged 47 and Daniel Morris aged 40 were found dead beneath a wrecked wagon at the bottom of Sand Creek five miles southeast of Greensburg. A farmer followed groaning horses to the site after a bridge abutment failed during a storm and the horses ran off. Morris’ watch stopped at 10:30 and $400 was found on his person.
Guided by a barking dog two men found Paul Demay hanging from a tree near his Dennison, Louisiana farm. He had fatally attacked his wife last Friday, fracturing her skull with a hatchet before vanishing. No inquest was held. Mrs. Demay is in critical condition.
New York August 7. A battle among Chinese societies in Dover Street Sunday night left three Chinamen dead and several wounded. Police broke up the riot and detained many Chinese district residents. The Hup Sing Tong reportedly started the trouble and chose the Chinese theater as the scene.
Indianapolis Aug 7 General Joseph H Lyon of Leavenworth Kansas has been named temporary major general of the uniform rank Knights of Pythias to fill the vacancy left by the death of General James R Carnahan The appointment was made by Charles B Shiveley of Richmond supreme chancellor
Milwaukee report says 25 year old Thomas Tarantino an Italian was killed in front of his home at 182% Detroit street Sunday night. The assailant's identity remains unknown and police continue investigating the case.
Great Northern and Northern Pacific officials report rapid filling of vacant operator posts. Traffic is said to be normal with all passenger and freight moving on schedule. Union leader claims traffic is still tied up as telegraphers strike persists.
A Cleveland collision between Pittsburg line no. 560 and an eastbound St. Clair streetcar at 9:30 p.m. killed two year old Cora May Martin and fatally injured six others while fifteen more suffered minor injuries. Ambulances rushed victims to homes and hospitals as authorities investigated. Fatally injured include James Martin's family members and Motorman Frank Williamson. seriously hurt include Patrick Kilduff and several Kilduffs plus Mrs. Ott.
In Caledonia Ontario on Sunday a gas explosion wrecked two buildings trapping twenty two people. The Bell Telephone agency employed twenty of the buried workers. Four were fatally injured: A E Jones George Murray Gerard Delacherois of Toronto a surveyor and Thomas Draper a clerk.
Elias William Mortimer former grand commander of the Minnesota G A R and city ticket agent for the Minneapolis and St. Louis railroad died Sunday morning from heart trouble in Minneapolis. He was born in Hastings England in 1887.
Captain Evan P. Howell, longtime Southern journalist and Confederate veteran born December 10, 1839 in Milton county, died at noon Sunday after a three week illness. He helped rebuild Atlanta after the war, led the Atlanta Constitution with Grady and Hemphill, and remained influential in Democratic circles.
In Smyrna Delaware on a Sunday morning a dispute at Friendship camp meeting near Clayton led to gunfire after negroes playing craps along the Delaware and Chesapeake railroad. George Jackson of Middletown died from a heart shot John Pierce of Mount Pleasant was wounded in the back William Guy was seriously hurt.
Jefferson City Missouri August 7 State Senator Frank H Farris was acquitted by a jury in the circuit court on a bribery charge tied to a 1901 legislative bill repealing a statute barring alum use in baking powder known as the alum bill The verdict ends the long case against Farris who faced questions over influence on the measure.
Kid Hubert of Kansas City knocked out Jimmy Byrne of Chicago in the fourth round of a swift bout at State Line Ind Sunday. Elsie Mattson two years old of St Paul was killed early Sunday morning by poison fly paper fluid. Harry Freeman twenty three of St Barnabas hospital Minneapolis hanged himself Monday evening. St Paul lacrosse team beat Chicago club players 10 to 5 in Chicago Sunday. Mary J Carlisle widow of John G Carlisle secretary of the treasury had funeral at West Islip L I Sunday. 260 delegates attended the International Anatomical Congress opening in Geneva Sunday representing the world.
At Cincinnati the Reds defeated the Brooklyn Dodgers 8 to 6. Second game Cincinnati 2 Brooklyn 0. In St Louis the A's tied Philadelphia 6 to 6 with the nightcap Philadelphia winning 2 to 1. Columbus saw Kansas City win 7 to 3. Louisville hosted Minneapolis 10 to 3. Fort Wayne hosted Indianapolis as St Paul beat them 11 to 7. Toledo lost to Milwaukee 2 to 7 with a second game 6 to 6 after ten innings were called at dark.
On track No. 1 hard wheat Sept. and Dec futures quoted in Minneapolis with Sept at 1.10 and Dec around 1.08 to 1.06 as benchmarks for Northern grade prices. The report records standard No. 1 Northern at 1.08 and No. 2 Northern at 1.05 to 1.06 in the same session.
St Paul market figures show cattle good to choice steers 4.50 to 5.00, common to fair 3.75 to 4.25. cows and heifers 3.00 to 3.75. hogs 5.45 to 5.95. yearlings 4.50 to 5.75 and native lambs 5.00 to 6.00.
Duluth on August 5 reports wheat quotations for delivery along with flax prices. No. 1 Northern wheat on track at 1.08 with Sept and Aug futures listed, flax prices range from 1.45 on track to 1.30 for Sept and 1.18 to 1.17 for later months.

Western lambs 5.50 to 7.25.
