Ironton Strikers Tie Up Lines and Drive Nonunion from City

In Ironton Ohio and surrounding areas a strike by Camden Inter urban Electric Railway workers sparked violence as nonunion crews were driven from cars. Crowds pelted motormen and conductors. unionist James Sanders was dragged from a car and escorted home. Police were scarce as mobs disrupted traffic and the Beechwood park concert was canceled.

Desperate Battle Under Way on Isthmus of Panama

Tariff Commissioners Deadlocked Over Chinese Revision Plan

In Shanghai on Aug 4 British tariff commissioner Sir James T Mackay and Chinese officials failed to agree on a scheme for tariff revision. The row stems from Chinese objections to British inland navigation rules, seen as a sign of dishonesty by opponents of likin abolition. The American commissioner told Liu Kun Yi that the United States would not back likin removal, noting most U S imports head to Manchuria and northern provinces without likin.

Severe Storm Ravages Southwest Iowa Crops and Elevator

A severe storm swept southwestern Iowa on August 4 damaging crops in Pottawattamie and western counties with a hail stripe destroying corn. In Avoca lightning struck a Des Moines Elevator Co. elevator, destroying the building and contents valued at about $50,000.

New Orleans Street Railway and Telephone Workers End Strike

In New Orleans on August 4 the street railway and telephone firms agreed to raise electric line workers pay to 3 dollars per day from 2.50, effectively ending the strike. The accord settles the dispute with improved wages for the workers and restored service.

No Change in Anthracite Strike Says UMW President

Wilkesbarre Pa August 4 President Mitchell of the United Mine Workers visited Scranton and said there was no change in the strike situation. He doubted any mine would resume work next week and noted Oxford mine workers in the Lackawanna region were replaced by new men with old staff not returning. He reported the region faced the same conditions and that the strikers remained confident of victory.
