A massive August storm struck Mellette and surrounding towns in South Dakota, tearing up crops over about 20 miles by 10, turning many buildings windowless. The hail and heavy rain damaged Arlington’s glass and other structures while large areas near Hunter and Northville suffered extensive losses. Damages are still being tallied as one of the state’s most destructive storms. London reports revived rumors that Queen Victoria plans to retire in favor of the Prince of Wales. Circles note concerns over the queen’s health and say she may spend future years at Balmoral or Osborne, with Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle offered to the Prince and Princess of Wales.
Aug 1 Brooxmas 8 D reports a crowd of tramps boarded a freight to Watertown. Trainmen forced them off at the junction. A tramp stabbed brakeman Charles Gatell in the neck with a large knife, risking the jugular. Gatell captured the attacker, a 20-year-old man calling himself John Smith, claiming Kentucky origins. Gatell is seriously wounded but hoped to recover. threats of lynching occurred but restraint prevailed.
E. E. Granger, a wealthy Caintox, Wisconsin farmer, was found dead after reports say he was tarred and feathered following a Thursday beating of his wife. His body bore tar and feathers and chemists later found paris green in his stomach, deepening the mystery.
After a six week trial at Agram the Stenjve band of 86 with 18 murders and many assaults and robberies is condemned. Nineteen members including two women are sentenced to death, nine get 1 to 20 years penal servitude, and eight are acquitted.
New York aug 1 Tammany Hall endorsed Bryan and Sewall without waiting for the state convention. The executive committee voted 71 to 4 to adopt a resolution backing the Chicago candidates. James J Martin led the meeting and John C Sheehan outlined the endorsement noting Chicago delegates fought for sound money but were in the minority. The resolutions passed.
On politics day at Monona Lake Assembly Madison August 1 Republicans led by Senator John M Thurston defended the gold standard while Clarence Darrow for the silver Democrats argued for free coinage at 16 to 1 The crowd dispersed after two speakers offered closing replies and rebuttals

Atlanta, Aug 1. All eyes on the Populist state convention meeting next Thursday as it likely ratifies the St Louis ticket of Watson with Bryan. Judge James K Hines, former gubernatorial candidate and leader of Georgia's St Louis delegation, says the ratification will pass without a dissenting vote.
The strikers' executive committee orders a renewed industrial action at Brown Hoisting and Conveying company in Cleveland. They reject the state board of arbitration settlement for lacking union recognition and discharge of all non union workers, vow to continue the dispute.
Lincoln Neb Aug 1 A newspaper man reports receiving a letter from Frank A Day Republican lieutenant governor of Minnesota dated Fairmont July 28 stating Bryan is his ideal and that any Nebraska or Western man who votes against him deserves to be shot before breakfast.
William F. Harrity former chairman of the Democratic National Committee announces retirement from active politics. He says he will withdraw from party management and influence, save for duties as Pennsylvania member of the DNC. He will not attend state or county conventions or seek nominations or appointments.
Lixcoty Neb Aug 1 Mr Bryan has announced his itinerary for his Eastern trip. He and Mrs Bryan will leave Lincoln on the Burlington at 6 oclock Friday evening Aug 7 arriving in Chicago Saturday afternoon. They will stop over Sunday and leave Chicago on the Pennsylvania about midnight Sunday night reaching Pitts burg Monday night. They will stay over night in Pittsburg and leave for New York early Tuesday morning arriving there about 630 Tuesday evening. The national committee will meet in New York at the time of the notification and important campaign work will be discussed. From New York Mr and Mrs Bryan will go to Bath Me and spend a few days with the Sewalls.
Senator Allison writes to Harvey Ingham editor of The Upper Des Moines that an international agreement on bimetallism is probable in a reasonable time. He argues both precious metals are essential to value and world commerce and cites rising bimetallic sentiment in Great Britain and Germany.
Raeiau North Carolina August 1 The Democratic state committee met overnight and by 2 a.m. approved fusion with the Populists. Fusion on the state ticket was discussed but not acted on.
Atlantic City reports forty seven dead and forty eight injured from a Pennsylvania road disaster. Coroner’s jury inspects scene and signals as relief teams clear both tracks. Hauser bail set. morgue crowds, undertakers, and dramatic rescues color the aftermath in Atlantic City.
Nineteen victims from Bridleton, New Jersey were brought from Atlantic City by train this afternoon as about three thousand people gathered at the depot. The scene was intensely painful and no funeral arrangements have yet been set. Business in Bridgeton is largely suspended.

West Superior Wisconsin reports the flour handlers strike ending after three weeks. Strikers receive 25 cents more per hour for hour men and 1.75 dollars per day for regular men, a five cent increase across the board. They had demanded two dollars per day and higher hourly rates at docks and mills.
A settler named Dorman was found guilty in the circuit court at Oacoma for cutting timber on a school section. He faces a potential $1,000 fine or one year in prison. sentencing not yet set. South Dakota authorities are vigorously prosecuting timber offenses.
William Hawkins of Burlington was shot four times in front of McCoy's hotel by J. G. English and his sister Nellie English. Each fired two shots. Hawkins, who was engaged to Nellie, was dying within hours according to physicians. English claims Hawkins deceived Nellie, who lived at Galesburg, Illinois.

Selena Moore shot and instantly killed her lover George Tagney with George's own weapon at her home in Chicago. She claims the shot was in self defense.
At a Thirtieth Georgia regiment reunion in Orchard Hill Spalding county near Atlanta two elderly Confederate veterans were killed and four others seriously shocked by a violent lightning bolt during the gathering.
