Minnesota lawmakers reach a tax agreement minutes before the midnight deadline but postpone enactment, forcing an extra session. The plan trims the head tax and preserves cigarette and corporate taxes, aiming to fund a 428 million dollar two year budget and address utility relocation costs with federal cost sharing.
Cecile Dionne says she will marry radio technician Philippe Langlois after nursing graduation in August. The wedding likely in Europe with parental approval from the Dionne family of Callander Ontario. Cecile and Yvonne study nursing at Notre Dame hospital. Anette studies music in Quebec City. Marie helps as housekeeper for Yvonne and Cecile.
The Associated Press reports pleasant spring weather across Minnesota and nearby states with sunny skies and highs in the 70s and 80s. Temperatures reached 86 in Grand Forks and stayed around 73 to 79 in International Falls and Bemidji. A few showers may touch southwestern South Dakota later today, but most of the five-state area will stay fair through Wednesday.
MINNEAPOLIS Unfavorable winds postponed a stratosphere balloon flight designed to test high altitude parachute drops. The Air Force plans a Wednesday launch if weather permits with a seven foot gondola carrying a dummy pilot to about 92 000 feet before parachute descent.
Official readings from fire station roof at 8:30 AM show 59 degrees with a low of 48 and high of 84 in the past 24 hours. Conditions are generally clear.
President Eisenhower’s White House physician called the Georgia trip very beneficial to his health. The president gained two pounds to 172 and his cough has been virtually eliminated though occasional coughing may continue. He played golf at Augusta National and plans to fly back to Washington for ongoing legislative work.
Senator Joseph R. McCarthy of Wisconsin remained in serious condition from acute hepatitis at Bethesda Naval Hospital after a fairly quiet night. Cmdr. John H. Gilpin said he was slightly improved since admission and had been taken from an oxygen tent.
Augusta Ga A London report claiming Queen Elizabeth II’s visit to the United States is postponed was called completely wrong by White House press secretary James Hagerty. He said there is a standing agreement to receive the Queen at any time and denied commenting on Mrs Mamie Eisenhower’s health amid the talk of delays.
The 1957 regular session in St Paul ended at midnight Monday establishing a new high with 964 laws passed, surpassing 1955’s 882. An extra session will likely exceed the six bills approved in 1955 as lawmakers study highway reimbursement and rights of way by agreement.

A sharp aftershock in San Francisco's Mount Davidson area rattled chandeliers and dishes at 11:27 p.m. No damage was reported. UC seismologist John Denoyer called it a sharp aftershock from the March 22 quake, with about 300 aftershocks recorded.
Mrs Myra Nyberg a 51 year old farm woman and mother of fifteen disappeared Saturday while walking from her home south of Big Lake Minnesota to buy groceries. Sheriff Ches ter Goenner said memory loss is suspected and her husband was to meet her in Big Lake at noon. Police have not located her.
Cathy Ann Wilson age four of Austin area was killed about 5 30 p m Monday after crossing Highway 16 East to pick dandelions then returning home. She was struck by a car driven by Mrs Carl Anderson of Dexter as it headed west in Nicolville four miles east of Austin. Anderson said the child suddenly stepped out and she tried to avoid her. The funeral will be held Wednesday at Westminster Presbyterian Church with burial at Grand View Memorial Gardens. Cathy Ann survived by parents two brothers and a sister. Her death marks Mower County s fourth traffic fatality this year.
King Hussein of Jordan, at a news conference in Amman, rejected Soviet claims of US interference and said Jordan will accept a 10 million dollar US aid package as long as it does not commit Jordan to the Eisenhower Doctrine. Foreign Minister Rifai stated aid would be unconditional and not threaten Jordan’s sovereignty.
The United States charged that international communism acting as the Soviet Union's agent aided foreign intervention in Jordan. A State Department statement framed the aim as a Red takeover, while White declined to declare the crisis over, noting King Hussein is best positioned to judge.
Senator Knowland warned Congress will cut more than three billion dollars from President Eisenhower’s budget and defer tax cuts. He criticized the proposed federal school aid as unwise and said the government may not exit the school program in four years. The remarks came at a Congressional Action Breakfast during the U S Chamber of Commerce meeting.
William G. Ryan 26, of Crystal, died after his motorcycle collided with a car in Robinsdale. Mrs. Everett Corbett of Minneapolis drove the car and was treated at North Memorial Hospital and released. Her daughter Barbara 14 remained hospitalized overnight for observation after serious cuts and bruises.
Joseph Robert son newly appointed Minnesota tax commissioner collapsed at the State Capitol Monday night and was taken to University Hospitals in Minneapolis. He was sent home after treatment and described as a temporary upset by attendants. Mrs Robertson cited long hours and flu in the family as factors keeping him from returning to wind up work on the compromise tax program during the legislative session.
U S Marines from the 6th Fleet ashore in Beirut wearing tropical dress uniforms for a liberty party. The Mount McKinley led a task force including the Forrestal and Des Moines as the 6th Fleet, about 100 miles off Beirut, prepared for potential action if necessary.
