The ethics chairman aims to draft rules of conduct to preserve and enhance the reputation of the House. The body will be the Committee on Standards of Official Conduct for House members, officials, and employees.
General Westmoreland told Congress that only sustained military political and psychological pressure can defeat the Communist enemy in Vietnam. He described U S forces as unbeatable and warned of continued enemy buildup across the DMZ and through Laos with intensified attacks on installations hamlets and districts. He said North Vietnam has strengthened its main force units and vowed continued U S resolve and reinforcements.
The $700 million merger of Chicago Great Western into Chicago and North Western, approved by the ICC, is not expected to affect Austin. Hormel Co transportation head Robert Proof says no anticipated impact and no service changes. CGW station agent B. G. Plowman notes the merger does not take effect until June 1, so timing is uncertain.
A Bloomington man H Michael Parks 39 died after his car crashed into a tree in Bloomington. Duluth pedestrian Mary Biggar 73 was fatally struck and dragged in downtown Duluth. Driver Howard Ignatius 19 of Duluth listed by police. The Minnesota traffic toll now stands at 189 for the year, up 14 from last year.
Rep. Neal Smith announces an $856,991 Education grant for Drake University Des Moines to construct a three story fine arts building valued at $5.4 million. The project will house a lecture hall recital hall library classrooms and offices with potential staff consolidations and railway accounting integration noted.
Mille Lacs County Grand Jury indicted Helen Kehn on two counts of first degree murder for the stabbing deaths of her husband Chester Kehn and their infant son Peter. She pleaded innocent at arraignment in District Court. Bond set at $25,000 on each count. no trial date. Bodies found April 17 at the Kehn home near Isle.
ST PAUL AP The Sunday liquor bill was sent to a House subcommittee after Speaker Duxbury objected that no community under 5 000 could qualify. Supporters fear the move kills the bill which passed the Senate 38 27.
In Minnesota, lawmakers push a reform package beyond Governor LeVander’s plan. Attorney General Head says a referendum on a tax bill is quite possible, with a secret draft likely to include a gross receipts or excise tax. The measure may appear next week in a House subcommittee before reaching the Tax Committee.

Naples Dr. Carl Coppolino was found guilty of second degree murder in his wife Carmela’s death and sentenced to life in prison. Bailey demanded a new trial and protested the verdict as invalid while the judge denied bail pending appeal.

Two year old Mathew Goodard of Nichols died at University Hospitals after a fall from a tree at his parents home in Iowa City. He passed away about two hours after the incident.

The U S Court of Appeals will hear a Des Moines high school students suit seeking an injunction against discipline for wearing black arm bands in protest of the Vietnam War. The case seeks damages and will be decided next October by eight judges. Additionally Rock Island Railroad reports first quarter revenue at record highs but posts a net loss of 699896 versus 1760331 profit a year earlier.
An Omaha filling station attendant, 55-year-old Ervin L. Reimers, was shot and killed at Ginn Service Station on Thursday night. Police say the fatal bullet struck him in the head while he stood at the station and appeared to be fired from an elevated position to the station's southwest corner.
