Strikes Roil Chicago as Mob Attacks Cable Car

In Chicago on April 18 a 2000 strong mob attacked a State Street cable car carrying two African American workers from Montgomery Ward & Co. Police rescued the men and arrested them for protection. Two beating victims, including Henry Auten, suffered severe injuries amid street disturbances tied to a broader strike. Mayor Dunne eyed continued talks with the union and Montgomery Ward officials.

In Case Against Mitchell Indictments Questioned

Portland April 18. In response to Senator John H Mitchell’s charge that the federal grand jury that indicted him on Oregon law fraud charges was illegal and that U S District Attorney Heney was biased, Heney introduces affidavits confirming his appointment and lack of malice. The affidavits also affirm George Gusin is a naturalized U S citizen.

Objections Over Affidavit Procedure In Naturalization Case

Defense objects to the affidavit introduction claiming improper procedure. Heney cites a US statute allowing affidavits to prove naturalization and urges abatement pleas be tried by a judge without a jury while federal law permits affidavit evidence. Finnish miners strike closes several Minnesota mines

In Duluth on April 18 striking Finnish miners forced 1500 workers to quit at Chisholm Hibbing and Buh mines. They shut the Mahoning Agrow and Albany mines adding about 600 more idle. They threaten to take pumps offline by 10 a.m. if demands are not met and urge governors troops to guard property.

District Attorney Surrenders Letters in Nan Patterson Case

New York on April 18 reports two developments in the Nan Patterson case. The district attorney surrenders letters from Mrs. Smith and there is another postponement of the actress Nan Patterson's trial.

Seizure Letters and Personal Effects Returned in Suit

The district attorney released a bundle of letters and papers seized from the trunk of Mrs. J. Morgan Smith, Nan Patterson’s sister, after a lengthy legal contest. The bundle, opened by counsel Mr. Limburger, included letters, insurance papers, and personal effects. Lim Burger says the suit will continue to establish permanent possession of the property. Jerome counters that the case is ended as the items were already relinquished. The article also notes a mandate from the U.S. Supreme Court in the Northern Securities case, directing costs of $20 to the Securities Company and remanding the matter to the New Jersey district circuit court.
