Prime Minister Anthony Eden called a general election for May 26 amid battles over the economy and Britain's role in easing East‑West tensions. Labour claims the government fears unemployment and a worsening trade deficit, while calls for major power talks on disarmament grow louder.
The House accepted minor Senate amendments and sent the fair employment practices bill to Gov. Freeman. He praised the Legislature and said he would be honored to sign the measure when it reaches his desk.
In Des Moines a fire and blast from a new 27 inch television caused about $1000 damage at Dr. Verne J. Wilson’s home Friday night. Mrs Wilson unplugged the set as it smoked and daughter Molly, 12, saw flames. Firefighters doused the blaze, the picture tube then exploded, one fireman was knocked back but no injuries occurred.
About 25,000 textile workers in Maine Massachusetts Rhode Island and Vermont walked out over wages while 25,000 non operating L N railroad workers and 50 000 CWA eligible employees joined strikes in nine Southern states. Violence and damage were reported as talks continue with the National Mediation Board seeking a settlement.
In St. Paul a bill to curb obscene literature failed in a test vote 81 to 31 in the House. Backers may try again before midnight Wednesday. If enacted by the Senate, the measure would bar sale to minors of obscene books and magazines with a possible amendment to limit to comics.
The Minnesota House approved a nearly 88 million dollar bill for state institutions and welfare by a 111 to 0 vote. A conference committee is expected to reconcile House and Senate versions with differences over old age assistance grants and funding levels.
National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis outlines an Salk vaccine distribution plan moving from the South to the North. Dr. Hart Van Riper notes early school closures and an earlier polio season in the region as reasons for the approach. Dr. Jonas Salk returns to Pittsburgh to fanfare as funds and medals pour in from across the country.
The Atomic Energy Commission reported a large underground desert blast at Frenchman Flat near Las Vegas on Friday. Three unmanned F80 jets were flown toward the blast. one crashed in the mountains, another in a dry lake, and the third landed at Indian Springs Air Force Base amid a staged civil defense observation experiment planned for April 26.
A 42 year old Minneapolis woman Thelma Brudelie was killed when a car struck a street intersection, both drivers were jailed on drunk driving charges. Richard Wells 45 and Talmadge Maxwell 21 were jailed. Another woman passenger died in a separate crash on Highway 55 near Minneapolis. Minnesota traffic toll rose to 130 for the year, 32 below last year.
Perry mourns longtime attorney F H Don Carlos who died after surgery at a Kansas City hospital. Funeral services are set for Sunday in Perry. Carlos practiced law here for 43 years and was a prominent local figure.
Shirley Kezar heads Austin High School with a 3.819 GPA and is valedictorian while Jerry Wolf earns 3.771 as salutatorian. Both seniors are active in clubs and activities and plan college study with careers in counseling or law.
Vice Admiral William M. Callaghan, commander in the Far East, hailed Japan's growing potent naval force as nearly 100 small U S warships have been transferred over the past year. He spoke at the ceremony marking the transfer of seven U S minesweepers to Japan in Sasebo.
A 27 year old St. Paul man died at Ancher Hospital from injuries after a beating. Roy Russell Jr of 377 West Central was found in a vacant lot near 527 St. Anthony dragged by his attacker. Police search for a 34 year old St. Paul man described as the assailant. Russell suffered a skull fracture and multiple jaw fractures.
SIOUX CITY, Iowa Two Sioux City men and a Californian were given six month prison sentences after pleading guilty in Federal Court Friday. Charles Louis O'Grady, 61, of California, pleaded guilty to writing extortion letters to Cedar Rapids residents and threatening to kill them unless they paid money. Edwin J. Maas, 28, Sioux City, listed two non existent children as dependents on his 1951 federal tax return while living in Minneapolis. Marvin Lee Viscus, 24, Sioux City, pleaded guilty to three theft charges and cashing government checks stolen from a mailbox.
Fire Chief John Tobar urged more detailed information when calling the station for emergencies. He noted a 6 40 p m drowning call lacked the danger mention and only said send the fire truck. A second call questioned truck departure five minutes later before 6 50 p m when Austin Cab Co notified the nature of the emergency. The department then sent ambulance boat and resuscitator. A life jacket fell from the boat and was not yet turned in.
The Des Moines based Iowa Association for Mental Health has reelected the Rev. C. W. Phillips as its president for another term.
Margaret Rose Loberg 22 month old daughter of Mr and Mrs Elwood C Loberg drowned Friday night in a drainage ditch behind her Austin area home. Neighbors and authorities searched the area while the Milwaukee and Great Western railroads and township board considered filling the ditch. Funeral services were planned for Monday at 2 p.m.
David Walker a 17 year old Oskaloosa High School senior will address the national convention of the Daughters of the American Revolution in Washington D C next week He was one of four winners in the recent national Voice of Democracy contest.
