A powerful blast at the Lapua government ammunition factory north of Helsinki killed at least 37 to 40 workers, many women, and left the building a wreck. Evacuations followed as hospitals treated dozens wounded and a government inquiry was ordered.
Patricia Hearst faces a lengthy court ordered psychiatric evaluation after a delayed sentencing in the 1970 armed bank robbery case. Judge Oliver Carter ordered the exam and possible sentence modification pending the San Diego evaluation results. Hearst, 22, remains in custody with a pending pretrial on related charges in Los Angeles.
The Senate approves President Ford's record defense spending for fiscal 1977, trimming only 300 million from the 101.1 billion request. An amendment for a 500 million cut fails 58 to 27 as the overall 412.6 billion spending ceiling heads to the House after Easter recess.
The House Judiciary Committee reversed course and sent a gun control bill to the House floor for a vote, including a ban on Saturday night specials and mandatory penalties for gun use during felonies, on a 2012 tally. The action follows other political developments reported from Washington and international capitals.
International Multifoods Corp and Smoke-Craft Inc announced an agreement in principle for Multifoods to acquire Smoke-Craft in a pooling of interests. Smoke-Craft shareholders would receive 162,500 Multifoods common shares. Approval by boards and Smoke-Craft shareholders is required.
Unions reject a new plan to ease pay cuts during the 15 day walkout in San Francisco. A judge ordered strikers to return to work as supervisors pressed for an official response by 8 am. Police warned of fines and jail for continued picketing while residents protest the disruption of buses trolleys and cable cars serving 250000 daily riders.
Senate leaders say a $2.5 billion public works jobs bill stands a good chance of approval by President Ford if Congress avoids adding costs. The measure aims to create 50,000 to 100,000 construction jobs while excluding vetoed programs and facing possible amendments.
In the West Bank Arab voters swing to anti occupation candidates in 22 towns, with 62,966 Palestinians voting 72.3 percent turnout. Mayor Karim Khalaf of Ramallah praises united front against settlements while Israeli radio notes protest. Younger anti Israel candidates lead, traditionalists fewer.
The body of a man found in the Blue Earth River was identified as Robert William McCumber, 28, of Mankato. The body was recovered Sunday by children playing near the river about four miles southwest of Amboy. Authorities had withheld identification while notifying kin.
Kamal Jumblatt accused Syria of planning a large scale invasion of Lebanon and appealed for foreign help after Assad threatened further intervention. Jumblatt met US French and Soviet diplomats as Egypt urged Syria to stay away from Yasir Arafat’s PLO. he cited 6000 Syrian troops and 7000 Saiqa guerrillas already in Lebanon.
Commercial shipping on the Missouri River set a record with 171000 tons moved in March as 15 towboats operated on the river. Col. Harry Mumma, division engineer, cautioned that early results do not guarantee a yearly record.
