Area Students Win Science Fair Awards

Area students earned multiple awards at the Southeast Division Regional Science Fair in Winona. John Herzog, 7th grade, won a southeastern Minnesota Dental Society award. Lyle High freshman David Kuechenmeister won gold and blue for nitrates in wells. Pacelli freshmen Mary Regner, Caroline Rysavy, and others also received blue ribbons and placements.

Quake Hits Yugoslavia and Hungary. death toll rises

An earthquake struck northern Yugoslavia and southern Hungary with at least one death and over 100 injuries. Belgrade and Budapest reported damage and panic as buildings shifted, schools closed, and thousands fled. Hardest hit areas included Szekszard and Slavonski Brod with significant structural damage and uninhabitable houses.

City to Lose Bus Service in Austin

Austin Transit Inc will suspend operation of city buses May 31 due to insufficient business. President Bill Pike says there is no bankruptcy, buses will be sold individually or as a fleet, and bills will be paid as usual despite the halt.

In St Moritz Switzerland Buddy Werner 28 an American Olympic alpine ace and Barbi Henneberger 23 a West German women’s champion die in an avalanche while filming a ski fashions movie near Samedan. Fifteen others survive or are rescued.

Grissom and Young Named Gemini Orbital Team

Maj. Virgil I. Grissom and Lt. Cmdr. John W. Young were chosen as the first two astronauts to pilot a two man Gemini orbital mission later this year. Backup crew will be Cmdr. Walter M. Schirra Jr. and Capt. Thomas P. Stafford.

Tornado Toll in Iowa Kansas Missouri Hits Six Die

Dazed survivors search rubble as tornadoes ripped eastern Kansas western Missouri and southwestern Iowa. Six people were killed and at least 50 injured. Destruction spread from Garnett to Yorktown with homes barns and businesses damaged or destroyed and telecommunication lines knocked out.

Winds Haul Damage Through Rochester City Area

Severe winds struck Rochester causing roof damage to businesses including a Holiday Motel server area and nearby Sears outlet. A sun deck at the Arthur Hotel collapsed and a large sign fell. Rain accompanied the storm with up to 50 mph winds near the Mayo Clinic area. One area suffered tree damage as thunderstorms moved from a low pressure center.
