A young driver, late teens to early thirties, accelerates on a dry highway at midnight causing a fatal crash. The report notes this as part of 99 fatal accidents in the first quarter of 1957, highlighting the dangers of speed.
Minnesota highway safety officials note 134 deaths in a three month period, with 64 of 150 fatally injured drivers aged 20 to 34. Speeding cited as the leading cause, especially in the two hours after midnight, and 106 causative factors were tallied across 99 fatal crashes.

A swift winter storm moves from the Rockies into the Great Plains and parts of the Midwest. Snow totals rise to 13 inches in parts of Wyoming while Texas to Tennessee brace for possible tornadoes and severe thunderstorms. Hal E. Neal a 56 year old cattle buyer from Fargo North Dakota was killed when his car was struck by a Great Northern freight train two miles north of Crookston Minnesota on a county road. The crash raised Minnesota traffic deaths for the year to 142. A separate weekend incident near International Falls left 13 year old Sandra Johnson dead when a car overturned into a water filled ditch. Six other teens escaped serious injury.
Pakistani border police reported Dadshah, leader of an Iranian bandit gang that killed three Americans, slain. They announced the capture of 18 gang members including Ahmed Shah who allegedly confessed murdering Mrs. Anita Carroll of Issaquah Washington, wife of a U S Point Four official. Iranian police had earlier said three bandits were killed, including the alleged killer, a discrepancy not immediately resolved.
The Supreme Court granted a hearing for Cary Chessman, the Los Angeles sex offender known as a "lover's lane" rapist. Convicted May 22, 1948, Chessman has delayed execution in San Quentin's gas chamber through years of state and federal court actions.
Secretary of State Dulles outlined a plan to create a long term easy pay loan fund for needy nations, proposing up to 750 million dollars annually in future years. He urged transferring military aid to the Defense Department, keeping ICA for nonmilitary aid, and preserving a 100 million contingency fund.
The United States and Saudi Arabia reach a five year extension allowing U S forces to use Dhahran air field. Washington agrees to sell more military equipment to expand Saudi armed forces and upgrade civil air facilities at Dhahran and Dampam near the Persian Gulf. The talks fail to secure permission for Jewish Americans to serve with U S advisory groups at Dhahran.
A Varig airliner crash near Bage kills 40 including 5 crew and 35 passengers while a Rio suburb train collision takes 20 lives and 13 injured. A landslide at Petropolis buries a house, killing seven. Obvious pattern of multiple disasters in one day across Rio de Janeiro state.
