Government forces suffer defeat near Caucagua in Petare while Rio Chico district rises in arms. The regime nears financial collapse, unable to pay soldiers as crowds resist enlistment. President Castro shifts troops from Los Andes, home of the Andinos, as customs receipts fall daily.
Judge Green announced the verdict in the Doyle Burns mining suit ruling against defendant Burns and denying the motion for a new trial. He instructed attorneys to prepare judgment papers totaling 446000 dollars and rejected Doyle’s petition for an additional 438000 dollars.
London dispatch from Lord Kitchener reports Commandant Kritzinger captured December 17 at Hanover Road Cape Colony acquitted after court martial on charges of four murders and train wrecking plus cruelty to prisoners. He is being treated as an ordinary prisoner of war.
Des Moines reports three men killed and others injured in a collision on the Chicago Great Western line at Reinbeck Iowa. The incident occurred near Reinbeck with details scarce and investigators on scene. Local authorities and railroad officials await fuller casualty figures.
Lamont Iowa reports President Joseph Smith and counselor E L Kelley chosen to preside at the opening business session. The church recorder shows 2325 baptisms and 2218 deaths in the past year, with a net gain slightly above last year but below the ten year average.
Great Northern officials report eastbound passenger train No. 4 wrecked at Winchester after colliding with a freight car blown onto the track. The engine and seven cars left the rails. The fireman, unnamed, is believed to have escaped with minor scratches. No other serious injuries reported.
The Great Northern and Northern Pacific railways will not obey a railway commission order on Crookston Fergus Falls and other Minnesota terminals and have appealed to Ramsey County Court. The plea questions the commission’s authority and argues current and other station rates were just and the order unfairly modifies them.
A peculiar landslide near St. Genevieve de Batiscan wipes out the farm of Joseph Baptiste St. Arnaud along the river Eivelillet. The house barns and granaries are burned and collapsed except for the sitting room where the farmer's wife and six children survive, walls intact and dug out unharmed.
The House approved a strict Chinese exclusion measure including all who are Chinese by birth, descent, or mixed blood and extended the ban to the Philippines and U S possessions. The bill also re-enacts existing exclusions and mandates enforcement, while a separate action extended national bank charters for 20 years amid a Senate battle.
Remains of a man and a woman were found in a railway station box at Gilroy California after 19 years. The box was left by rancher Jamison who vanished soon after and never returned. No identifying marks were found on the bodies. Police presume a double murder.
The schooner H. C. Wright arrives from Hawaii with the crew of the British ship Frankistan, which was ashore burned at sea near Newcastle, New South Wales. Details await the Wright’s anchoring in the harbor.

The Supreme Court has refused to dismiss Admiral Sampson's suit to recover prize money for guns and armament of the Spanish vessel Maria Teresa captured off Santiago. The case, filed in Washington, concerns prize claims from the capture during the Spanish American War.
Representative Hay of Virginia, chairman of the Democratic house caucus, has called for a conference of Democratic members at 8 o clock p m to discuss Cuban reciprocity. The meeting aims to align party stance on trade relations with Cuba.
