General Douglas MacArthur sank into what doctors described as a peaceful coma after three major operations and 13 days in critical condition at Walter Reed Hospital. Army physicians reported no clear cause and noted his vital signs remained fragile with treatment ongoing.
Seven people died and hundreds were left homeless after a tornado ripped through Wichita Falls and the surrounding area including Sheppard Air Force Base. An estimated 240 homes were destroyed, 69 injured, and 46 hospitalized. Firefighters and guardsmen aided relief as FEMA and Red Cross mobilized shelters and canteens from Dallas and Fort Worth.
Andy Maday manager of Wallace's was named chairman of Midtown Association's Retail committee by president George Leland. Leland announced three new members Bud Thompson Sears Leon Robbins Robbins Interior Decorators and Mrs Toni Tomhave Stevenson Marvins with other members listed. Plans include a 40 page Herald supplement sale and 2000 more copies for the Austin trade area plus a shoplifting and merchandise security clinic and interbusiness sharing of sales and customer relations practices to improve personnel proficiency. Uruguayan police confirm the exile while Brazil’s new president Paschoal Ranieri Mazzilli moves to stabilize the economy with U.S. backing. Goulart’s wife Maria Teresa plans to join him as they seek a temporary home away from Brazil.
Anchorage tremor, 7.5 on the Richter scale, followed a massive Good Friday quake. Police reported no casualties or major damage in downtown, though several cities felt the aftershock. Aftershocks since March 27 total around 50 with widespread alarm and Civil Defense hot lines active.
