Heikki Hannikainen son of Finland's ambassador to Peru and member of the Columbia University rowing crew saved 7 year old Ann Cushion from the Harlem River during a workout. Ann had fallen into the river while throwing rocks from shore with friends. The rescue occurred at the Harlem River, which separates Manhattan and the Bronx, and was documented by AP Wirephoto.
Senators Douglas and Cooper spear desegregation arguments for the House bill amid rising absenteeism in the Senate. The bipartisan duo speak daily to push the desegregation section, seeking quick quorum despite leaders Humphrey and Kuchel being away, as only 53 and 43 minutes yielded quorums.

General of the Army Douglas MacArthur remains in critical condition at Walter Reed Army Hospital. An official bulletin said emergency treatment started to address diminishing kidney action and that there had been no esophageal bleeding for 20 hours. The tube feeding through the throat was being removed while condition was described as critical.

Tornadic storms affected Missouri and Illinois with one person reported missing and over 40 others injured. Minnesota highway leader Marshall urged about 25 million dollars more annually for 25 years to upgrade highways, citing a 20 year study showing a construction need of 1.234 billion dollars and calling for expanded rights of way efficiency.
President Johnson announced 131 postmaster nominations on Thursday. From Minnesota Alton H. Osgood Cloverton and Jack R. Maddy McGregor to North Dakota Stephen J. Urie Cogswell and Kenneth I. Jones Parshall were named among the nominees.
John C. Stettner, 58, of Hancock Minnesota, was killed when pinned between a truck and a tractor while attempting to load the tractor onto a trailer on Harold Evenson farm. The trailer overturned, crushing him.
State Insurance Commissioner Cyrus Magnusson testified in the Norman Mastrian case in Duluth as the defense sought to cast doubt on prosecution witness Sheldon Morris. Magnusson noted Morris held licenses with three firms, two canceled in 1957 and one not renewed, and that Morris denied a crime when asked on an insurance license applicaton. He said he saw a letter to the North Dakota commissioner about license cancellations. Mastrian stands accused of first degree murder in the slaying of Mrs. Carol Thompson. Morris is an alleged accessory. The 34th day of the trial ended amid jailhouse listening device testimony linking Mastrian to the crime. Robert Burns testified about a jailer using a listening device during a jail conference with Mastrian and his attorney. Burns overheard but could not identify voices. The case ties Mastrian to the March 6, 1963 murder as the payoff man, while Mrs. Thompson’s husband serves a life term.
Gov. Karl Rolvaag visited Willmar State Hospital and said a $12.6 million welfare funding rise is welcome but insufficient. Sen. Fay Child joked about a 10 percent boost in 1965 to counter a 5 percent state spending cut. Child noted welfare appropriations rise from $9 million to $12 million biennially to cover costs.
A well-qualified Latin American source says Washington and Panama have agreed to restore diplomatic relations and to confer on settling their dispute over the Panama Canal.
An intensive search was launched in Oklahoma City for civilian passengers of a Frisco Railroad train after a soldier aboard the train was suspected of having spinal meningitis. One passenger, Mrs. H. W. Turner of Petersburg Virginia, said her 13 year old daughter sat with a soldier, and Turner has five young daughters.
New York AP reports Rev. Dr. John Haynes Holmes aged 84 a prominent Protestant civic leader and author on sociology and religion died today at his home.
State adjutant general office announced a unannounced practice alert to test Minnesota Army National Guard response between April 6 and April 17. About 10,000 guardsmen in 68 communities will participate. A separate Washington note says a USAF board will judge if the crew of a Bebe reconnaissance bomber that strayed into East Germany last month may continue flying.
Rep. Robert Kenner announced Thomas Vukelich of Gilbert will fill the Legislative Research Committee seat for the 8th District. He replaces the late Homer Carr of Proctor.
