Use of New Grasses in Texas May Be Practiced After Tests

Texas researchers discuss Buffel grass, South African bluestem, Coastal Bermuda, and perennial crab grasses as promising forage options. Coastal Bermuda leads potential, with seed heads nonviable. Buffel grass shows drought resistance and livestock appeal but needs more testing. Native grasses like spear grass, little bluestem, big bluestem, switch grass, and blue grama are being domesticated for forage yield.

Milk sold to Austin creamery, surplus fed as beef-type calves. Barn includes modern milk and feed rooms. annual feed mix totals 100 lb bran 100 lb oats 100 lb brewer's grain 100 lb soybean meal 50 lb cotton seed meal 50 lb citrus pulp. Soil conserved with terraces and fertilizers. hubam clover and Johnson grass hay yield 1000 and 1300 bales for winter feed. Georgetown Gets Ath Year Class

Georgetown will host its first fourth year veterans agricultural class and will also take in the fourth year class at Andice. The Anderson class, taught by Lloyd Luker, was the first in Williamson County and has now joined Georgetown due to a shortage of applicants. Cotton farmers faced delays as rain arrived late and slowed planting while truck gardens flourish with rain ensuring home grown vegetables this fall and winter.

A Central Texas veterinary association is formed with Dr. Jerry Barak of Schulenburg as president. Members are expected from Austin to Brenham. Officers include Dean Brown of Bellville as vice president and F. L. Gunn of LaGrange as secretary-treasurer.
