Georgia Town Outlaws Klan Mask Wearing
IRON CITY Ga Sept 5 Wearing of masks and hoods in public was outlawed by ordinance Monday night in this town where the one armed mayor has reported shooting encounters with the Ku Klux Klan. The five man council adopted the measure unanimously. No Klansmen protested. Bill Hendrix of Tallahassee Fla spokesman for a Klan group said he was not opposed to the ordinance. The council also revoked Mayor Drake's authority to hire special policemen. Three men Drake hired as special officers face bonds on charges of shooting at Klansmen during a midnight parade. Superior Court Judge Geer issued warrants during a hearing on assault charges filed by the mayor against Hendrix. Police chief testified Drake aides did not work under him. Drake had reported he drove away with an automatic shotgun after a group hooded men tried to kidnap him. Hendrix denied Klansmen involvement. He identified his outfit as Southern and Northern Knights of the KKK and named two anonymous higher ups. He announced a nation wide week of cross burning in protest of Paul Robeson and Communism.
