Hand Cobbler Berkman Keeps Texas Tradition Alive
Oscar Berkman, born in 1876 in Sweden, has repaired shoes in Georgetown for 42 years. He works by hand in a small shop with a single foot operated sewing machine and remembers customers by sight, not ticketing jobs. He keeps a quiet life with daughter Pauline, after wife Bertha died, and recently reconnected with his Swedish brother Carl, also a cobbler.
