Britain’s Labour government survived a no confidence motion by 353 to 222 in the House of Commons on October 27, amid debates over a 280 million pound budget cut. Churchill urged a general election while Attlee defended the fiscal plan and limited reforms ahead of next year’s electoral timing.
SMU trustees refused a $5 million endowment from George W. Armstrong Sr. after learning it would bar Jewish students. Dr Umphrey Lee was not fired, and the board rejected the conditions. Armstrong then offered land rights to Jefferson Military College in Mississippi. Allen J. Armstrong, the college’s business manager, was quoted on racial teaching ideas.
Czechoslovakia expelled two French Embassy members and arrested another amid charges of spying on uranium mining secrets. Three Americans face espionage accusations. The government cited written confessions and noted U S officials denied charges.

President Truman said a national emergency to end the steel and coal strikes is a long way off. He refused to invoke Taft Hartley court procedures soon and favored mediation and collective bargaining while leaving open a possible personal appeal.
An Amarillo pilot found the body of Harold Leland Jones Jr., 22, a student at Amarillo Junior College, in a light plane wreck in Palo Duro Canyon. Jones had taken off from Amarillo Municipal Airport Wednesday evening and disappeared. the wreckage was located Thursday afternoon and ground crews could not reach it until Friday.
Gillespie County in Texas becomes the first county in the state and among early adopters nationwide to complete its 1949 quota of the Christian Rural Overseas Program.
In a United Nations debate on the Greek Balkan issue the Chinese delegate charged the Soviet Union armed hundreds of thousands of Chinese Reds driving Nationalists to Chungking. He claimed Moscow supplied weapons from Japanese troops and supported Red control of Manchuria while US delegates urged action against Albania and Bulgaria for guerrilla aid.

Kalamazoo Michigan October 27 A freight train derailed trapping brakeman Bill Freeman who survived but suffered severe burns while aiding others after his wife Robinette, judged insane, killed their two children. Rescue workers found Engineer Harry L. Kelley among the wreckage. Freeman remained hospitalized as investigation continued.
