Texas and Rice renew their long running feud on the road with a 32,000 crowd expected. UT seeks a first 1948 football victory away from home as both teams rely on rushing power and deceptive plays. Rice holds a slight edge in rushing and Texas leads in passing while both defenses are similar.
The Austin School Board approved four school addition contracts totaling 236 826, with bids higher than May estimates by 45.8 percent. The meeting also addressed student fund raising, allowing Red Jackets to sell poppies for Armistice Day and participate in the parade, while studying policy for future observances.
A 3799 ton Venezuelan motor vessel Ciudad de Caracas reported fire 150 miles off Cape Hatteras. At 1114 p m EST the Coast Guard in New York received word the crew would abandon ship as the fire progressed rapidly. The number of crew aboard could not be estimated.
The two campaigns outlined East and Midwest stops in Cleveland Chicago New York and Boston with additional appearances. Dewey urged GOP workers to avoid responding to opposition attacks and prepared four major speeches in Albany. In Lubbock on Oct 22 two Hobbs New Mexico men were charged with arson by explosives over the June 14 bombing of the Texas New Mexico and Oklahoma Coaches office. Clyde Lomax 24 a former Hobbs policeman and Drew Storey 42 a Hobbs carpenter waived examining trial. Bond set at 2500 each. A fuse lit half stick of dynamite was thrown into Hurley Carpenter’s office during a bus driver strike that was later settled.
Mrs. Gladys Hall Perrine widow of Brig. Gen. Nat S. Perrine dies after a stroke tied to wartime stress. Born 1899 in Leander she mentored two Texas 36th Division regiments led by her husband. Survivors include son Lt Col Nat S. Perrine Jr. and brother Russell W. Hall. Burial planned at Arlington National Cemetery.
Britain bids for jet bomber supremacy with a secret two jet medium range plane in the painting and polishing stage. It is designed to reach 620 miles an hour and operate at 35 000 feet to meet air chiefs demands.
In San Marcos on October 22 prize money and blue ribbons were awarded to 31 women in the Uhland Community Fair homemaking division. Winners in handwork included Mrs A D Fuchs Jr and Mrs Alma Nickel. Canned goods prizes went to Mrs Richard Dressen, Mrs L O Schmidt, and others.
In Newark on October 22 a tipster warned Joe of an impending raid by rapping the print shop window. The officer appeared, the window opened, and a rapid dash followed as the tipster spoke.
Loyal troops recaptured Suncheon on the south central coast at 6 40 p m local time after rebels seized the city three days earlier. Reports say Yosu may have been retaken with little opposition and fighting around Suncheon is ongoing. Casualty and rebel strength figures are not yet confirmed.
Justice Department officials say a DC grand jury is hearing the payroll handling in Representative Parnell Thomas office. Assistant Attorney General Alex Campbell presented the case linked to FBI findings and press reports by Drew Pearson.
Paris emergency session leads to mobilization of army reservists as strikes and riots flare. Violence in coal regions leaves two miners dead and about 200 soldiers and workers injured in clashes.
Six neutral members of the UN Security Council urged Moscow to lift the Berlin blockade immediately as part of an East West settlement in Germany. They asked the four great powers to implement by November 20 the Moscow currency agreement and to reopen German talks. Argentine Foreign Minister Bramuglia presented the resolution and adjourned the meeting, with a vote possible on Monday.
Ten Germans were hanged for war crimes at Landsberg Prison where Hitler wrote Mein Kampf. Among the condemned was Alex Piorkowski a former pencil salesman who became a Dachau commander. others included Hans Trummler and eight more charged with killing fliers or torturing inmates. A youth, Wilfried Helm, was sentenced to death for slaying an American agent and a German policeman.

Paris reports state that two miners were killed in the early gunfire between strikers and gendarmes during an 18 day coal strike. At least 200 injured as authorities deploy troops and empower district governors to ban meetings.
William Ward Jr and Anthony Ferrari were close friends. Ward, a payroll guard, arranged a job for Ferrari. After Ward delivered a 2700 payroll, a gunman abducted him and shot him thrice. Ward survived and accused Ferrari, who was arrested nearby that evening.
The CIO United Packinghouse Workers accepted a four cent hourly raise for 25 000 workers in 24 Swift & Company plants. The base rate is 1.11 dollars per hour.
Lyndon Johnson told Dallas Reserve Officers Club that Russia will have the atomic bomb in two years and America would be attacked if Russia can. He arrived amid quiet campaign plans with no rallies or radio broadcasts for 10 days before the November 2 election. Johnson spoke of duties as Senatorial nominee and declined comment on Porter or Stevenson.
Hundreds of Communist workers battled police outside the Arabia Porcelain Factory in Helsinki on October 22. Police faced a stone and stick assault as non-striking workers were protected. Mounted officers charged in with whips and clubs to clear the area.
