Emma Jackson Long 36 took the oath as the first woman on Austin's City Council after a five hour session. She was appointed by the council amid a legal contest over authority to hold a nominating election. Her brief remarks pledged service to all citizens.
Former Air Force lieutenant Martin J. Monti, 27, of Florissant Missouri, indicted on 21 overt acts charging he surrendered to German forces in Italy 1944 45 and broadcast for the Nazis under the alias Martin Weithaupt. He allegedly joined the S S Elite Guard before later returning to Italy and the Fifth Army after Germany’s defeat.
Sterling Sasser Austin insurance man was named head of the employee division in the Community Chest drive as the 1949 goal was set at 219000. Assistant divisional chairman Williann Richardson and sectional leaders including Tom Harper and Bill Chute will lead key sectors. Division plans and budgets were approved by the Chest directors and reflect higher costs of living affecting agencies serving babies and children.

Federal Judge Luther M. Swygert held the International Typographical Union in contempt for seeking contracts that discriminate against non-union printers. He ruled the union violated the Taft-Hartley injunction and tried to maintain a closed shop. The ITU and top officers were ordered to appear within 10 days to show compliance. penalties were limited to court costs.

Paris reports on October efforts by the Security Council to forge a neutral backed plan for the Berlin crisis. Argentina, Belgium, Canada, China, Syria and Colombia considered questions to resolve the dispute and end the blockade while Russia veto prospects remained possible.
Michael Lintner 11 missed his mother's funeral after a Canadian air crash that killed Mrs. A. L. Lintner and left him seriously injured. The boy hung head downward for 42 hours before rescue and remains confined to bed in Norton Kas. His mother died Sept 28 when their light plane crashed north of Edmonton.
A report to the American military government says Russia has lost the political battle for Berlin but may use any means to seize control. Louis Glaser notes Berlin’s importance as a political keystone and warns Moscow could fight rather than compromise to push Soviet communism westward.
Rome reports Giuseppi Di Vittorio, head of Italy's Communist labor faction, warned of a 7,000,000-strong general strike unless the government concedes to demands of striking state workers. Over 1,000,000 government employees joined short walkouts to press for higher wages and benefits.
