Chinese Suchow garrison under orders to march south to救 Nanking and rescue the encircled 12th Army group reported no action. About 140,000 troops were trapped 67 miles south of Suchow and 145 miles north of Nanking. observers noted reluctance to abandon Suchow defenses.
Madame Chiang Kai-Shek arrived in Honolulu and will reach Washington by Wednesday to seek American backing for the Chinese government. Administration officials show private reluctance about expanding aid and question how much help Washington can offer to fight Communist forces.
Two Catholic priests at St. Marys Cathedral in Galveston fought off a masked intruder who opened the church safe. The clergy sustained injuries, including a fractured hand and a bruised eye.

A light freeze was forecast for low-lying Austin areas with temperatures not dropping below 33 degrees. Cold air was moving into Texas from the northwest but would only keep the current cool conditions, with no rain expected.
Czech refugee officials said Dr Rudolph Madar former secretary of the Czechoslovak Parliament fled to the US Zone of Germany. He was the second prominent Czech to escape in 24 hours.
