Pittsburgh endures historic blizzard with 28 inch snow piles and 14 deaths statewide 32 storm victims. Schools banks courts closed and utilities strained as floods hit central Pennsylvania.
The East suffered heavy losses as a weekend storm left 88 dead and caused multi million dollar damage. Weather officials called it the most violent storm recorded in the region, with winds up to 108 mph. Officials warned damage could surpass 400 million, exceeding earlier storms but deaths well below the 682 in 1938.

Earl Browder and two other witnesses face contempt charges after refusing to answer questions before a House committee. The same grand jury also indicted Dr Edward Rumsey Joseph Kamp and William Patterson for similar refusals amid investigations into communism and related groups.
