Northwest Korea sees intensified fighting as 110000 UN troops face a large Chinese Red force. US 24th Division advances near Chongju while South Koreans push toward Taechon. air power targets supply lines as observers note possible major battle ahead.
A pilot described Reds swarming across the countryside with long road columns and frozen fields. US artillery bombarded targets as Turkish forces supported 25th Division troops. On the night of the 25th a US Second Division regiment crossed the Chongchon River, engaging about 2,000 Reds 12 miles south of Huichon. Air observers noted large Red movements and concentrations north and northeast of Kusong.
Rome reports Mount Etna erupted Saturday night lighting Catania 26 miles away and sending lava toward nearby villages. Officials warn the eruption could be serious following a quieter period since December.
Washington reports the dying 81st Congress will convene in a four to five week lame duck session Monday to consider military and foreign policy spending, potentially approving up to 15 billion for defense and up to 500 million for an atomic weapons arsenal, with further debate on Yugoslavia aid and tax measures.
