Hundreds of Texas sportsmen staged early departures for the 1948 deer and wild turkey season as Fredericksburg and surrounding counties reported unprecedented hunting demand. Weather forecasts suggested cloudiness with fog and mild temperature shifts, while local stores sold large quantities of guns, ammo, and camp supplies.
Representative J Parnell Thomas of New Jersey pleads innocent to charges of padding his House office payroll. A grand jury indicted Thomas and a former secretary Helen Campbell for conspiring to defraud the Government by listing fictitious employees and routing salaries to Thomas. Trial tentatively set for Jan 10. bond set at 1000 dollars. possible max sentence 32 years and 40000 dollars in fines. The 53 year old, re elected this fall, chairs the un American activities committee but will relinquish that post with Democratic control.
State Superintendent L A Woods announced a $3 per capita apportionment from the State Available School Fund for 1948-49. The sum, calculated from a Sept 15 census of 1 532 894 students, totals $3 777 781 95 and brings this year’s per capita payments to six dollars. The first county administration deduction was taken from this payment, with another installment due in December.
Forrest Lee Bartlett and Martha Jane Singleton tied a vow in a lion’s cage at the Ararat Shrine Circus in Kansas City. The wedding occurred at the City Municipal Auditorium before about 4,500 spectators as lions watched in apparent indifference.

George W. Combs 48 of Waco died in a Georgetown hospital about 9 PM Sunday after a collision two miles north of Jarrell with a car driven by Jesse L. Miller of Austin. Combs' wife remained in Georgetown Hospital Monday night in shock with only minor injuries.

Roark Bradford 52 noted writer of Negro folk stories who died in New Orleans will have his ashes scattered on the Mississippi River after cremation. Bradford authored Old Man Adam and His Chillun and influenced the Broadway play and the film Green Pastures.
Fort Worth report says Ross Sterling former Texas governor remains in critical condition at a Fort Worth hospital. He was admitted September 21 and has required an oxygen tent periodically.
Bonham, Nov. 15, S E Bartley brother in law of Representative Sam Rayburn died at his home after months of illness. He was a landowner and former banker. The death occurred late Monday in Bonham.
The University of Texas Cultural Entertainment Committee says money will be refunded to ticket holders at the Music Building box office all day Tuesday for the Hazel Scott Concert.
The campus committee says Miss Scott refused to perform after being told her contract would not enforce a seating policy. Dr. Jones cites no contract mention of segregation and notes progress since Marian Anderson era. The group, led by Yvonne Adams, condemns the cancellation as a setback for inter race relations.
