Blanco County rancher Fritz Knebel, blinded in one eye by a dynamite accident, received aid from 23 neighbors who brought tractors to pasture and plowed a 65 acre field. A veterans class built the fence as doctors hope for some sight return in the injured eye.
The Board for Hospitals and Special Schools announced McCloskey General Hospital at Temple is not to be used by the state to relieve overcrowding in mental and other facilities. Instead, Vernon Army Air Field hangars will be acquired to house about 820 senile patients, with two hangars bought for the Vernon plan. The board also named M. E. Dumas as superintendent of the Corsicana Orphans' Home and enlisted surveys from experts for the blind and for special schools. A January session aims to secure appropriations and expansion for the hospital system.
Walter Winchell learns his mother Jennie Winchell 77 died after reportedly jumping or falling from a hospital window on the 10th floor. She had heart disease since 1941 and was at Doctors Hospital for an operation. Her body was found on the 87th Street sidewalk. Winchell planned to fly in from Miami after being notified.
Prince Charles celebrated his first birthday with a private tea party at Clarence House London after waving to supporters on the sidewalk. Guests included five-year-old Prince Richard and several young girls while Queen Mary, frail from a chill, stayed indoors.
Vancouver reports the Women's Christian Temperance Union protested Prince Charles's birthday cake flavored with rum. WCTU leader Mrs. J. A. Lade argued alcohol in cooking is morally wrong and that the royal family should set a higher standard of behavior.

Bertram E. Giesecke an Austin architect was appointed by Defense Secretary Louis Johnson to head a special commission investigating disgraceful military housing. The panel includes Frank E. McKinney and Clarence H. Low with Lawrence Westbrook as executive secretary. Johnson said service members deserve normal family life and better housing.
Ward Holman, wealthy rancher and nationally known horse racing owner promoter born in San Saba in January 1885, died at Temple Hospital after being rushed from Mineral Wells. Survivors include his widow Annie Bolk Holman, a half-brother George Holman and half sister Sister Mary. Services set for Tuesday at 3 p.m. with burial in City Cemetery.

The Supreme Court refused for a second time to review the wartime bribery conviction of former Representative Andrew J. May and the Garsson brothers. Their terms range eight to 24 months and sentencing could be eased or pardoned. May, 74, cites health issues after two years of legal battles.
In Brackenridge Hospital after being found with a self inflicted gunshot. Austin painter and paperhanger Jack Preston Nicholson 40 died at 9 13 p m. He was found in the driver seat of his car at 5513 Avenue F with a .44 caliber pistol in his lap. His wife witnessed the incident as detectives investigated the shooting and coroner's verdict was pending. Nicholson leaves a widow and five children.
The Outgoing State Board of Education approved six year adoptions for 155 texts under Gilmer-Aikin rules after a 6-3 vote for immediate adoption. Several members criticized legality and urged revisions to civics titles like American Government. John Ben Shepperd opposed most civics adoptions, while R B Cousins urged delaying decisions for the incoming board.
At a Monday night meeting the Parley School Board discussed a potential bond issue to finance planning for Austin public schools. Dr J W Edgar urged applying for a Bureau of Community Facilities loan to hire architects and plan projects up to contract letting. A motion to approve the recommendation was made but tabled for next month's session.
Fifteen miners emerged uninjured after being trapped for more than six hours at Maple Hill Colliery in Mahanoy City. A mine car derailment toppled timbers, blocking the shaft 600 feet underground. Rescue crews used tapping signals to communicate and pulled the men to the surface aboard a small donkey engine.
Joyce Crafton testified that James Heer acted amorously but she denied improper advances before the Ohio State incident. Heer, 20, is charged with first degree murder in the death of Jack McKeown, 21, after a homecoming dance at the Delta Tau Delta house.
