Health Agency Proposed by Cox Faces Legal Challenge
City officials were advised that the mayor cannot create a health board or abolish the city health officer position. A Cox backed ordinance would appoint a health board and a public health director who could hire and fire, replacing the present city county officer. The memo says only the city manager can appoint health board members and only state law governs the health officer’s duties. Cox aims to establish city health boards statewide.
