More than three million dollars was added to Austin building permit values on Friday. Four new University of Texas buildings contributed to the total, with Bellow Construction Corporation of Houston issued permits for three five story classroom buildings and a five story pharmacy building. The total cost was $3,210,478.
Two men died and three were injured in a two car collision six miles east of Amarillo on Highway 66 at Pullman Switch. Victims were Harry Elmer Martin 33 of Amarillo and Vern Ferguson 47 of Lefors. Critical injuries were Thomas Vern Ferguson 19 and Jack Allen McPeake 19 of Pampa, with Mrs Vern Ferguson listed as seriously hurt.
The 1950 census reveals Val Verde County up 1,104 to 16,577 with Del Rio at 14,167, and Lampasas County rising to 9,875 while Lampasas town reaches 4,867. Hill County falls from 38,355 to 31,153 as several counties record gains or losses across Texas.
Texas Employment Commission reports a 4.3 percent drop in unemployment across 17 major labor markets, totaling 69,430 unemployed. Dallas had the largest job gains and the lowest rate at 3.1 percent, while Beaumont-Port Arthur reached 12 percent and the statewide rate averaged 4.9 percent.
Houston Chronicle reports two gunmen held 15 people at a bar gambling room on Thursday and fled with 9,000 dollars. Some gamblers fear a wave of robberies across similar venues. An unnamed informant said the establishment did not notify police to avoid drawing publicity during a tight gambling period.
A man who forfeited bond and was jailed for missing his trial appeared in County Court-at-Law Friday for a re setting. His attorney told Judge Mace Thurman the defendant would be present next week, and the judge affirmed with a glance at deputies nearby.
A 32 year old Austin man Johnny Williford was arrested by federal officers on a charge of forgery and passing a government check. Agent Louis Benavides of San Antonio took him into custody at 1700 West 30th Street and he was charged with forgery and parting before Commissioner Robert Sneed.
