Austin Poised to Become Fifth Largest Texas City
Census supervisor James Stroud said Austin has a strong chance to rise to fifth in Texas by 1950, contending with El Paso and Corpus Christi. Fort Worth Houston Dallas and San Antonio are expected to stay ahead. The 1940 ranking had Austin sixth with 87,930, while El Paso had 96,810 and Corpus Christi 57,301. Stroud anticipated Austin’s count to be finalized next week as Texas population exceeded 7,000,000 with 1940 at 6,414,824. County counts show Lampasas up and Llano down from 1940.
