Eichelberger Warns Japan Security Ties to U S
Lieutenant General Robert Eichelberger, veteran of the Pacific, told the Dallas Athletic Club that the greatest prize for the Soviet Union would be Japan and warned the U S must keep Japan secure by arms, collective security, or self defense. He argued American security hinges on preventing Red domination and noted Japan’s cooperation since surrender. He cautioned against Japanese independence without allied security and warned Russia could control critical raw materials if Japan falls under Red influence. He praised Japan’s democratic move but stressed the need to keep the democracy protected through continued U S leadership and allied support.
