Soldiers Turn Y Into Center Replacing USO
Two run down buildings and scarce funds gave way to a new USO style center run by the YWCA in Austin after World War II. GIs renovated the cafeteria and living rooms at 914 Brazos, hosted dances, forums, and games, and helped with repairs. Romance and marriages grew from the program as servicemen and local women volunteered and socialized under Mrs. Edna T. Anderson and Mrs. Eveline Foley, creating a lively space near the bus station.
