Dust Storm Rips Across Midwest and Southwest

A severe dust storm swept Texas Oklahoma Kansas Nebraska Missouri with wind gusts 75 to 80 mph. It caused fatal highway crashes, roof damage, and prairie fires, crippling visibility and eroding cropland. At least 10 deaths were reported, with multiple injuries and long-distance travel disruptions.

Fleeing Wife and Child Slain in Bay City Shooting

In West Bay City a man shot and killed his wife as she fled with their two year old daughter. Dolores Kocsis died. Bonnie Jean was unharmed. The husband Frank Kocsis, 26, then wounded himself and remains in critical condition. The sheriff cited a violent quarrel as the motive.

Elephant Kills Boy in Ringling Barn Tragedy

Dolly the circus elephant crushed 5 year old Edward Rogers Schooley at a Sarasota training camp. The boy fed Dolly before the incident as witnesses said the elephant grabbed him with her trunk and stood on his head. The matinee proceeded without Dolly. state investigation followed.

Wind-Whipped Lexington Fire Destroys Ben Retzlaff Grocery

A Sunday morning blaze in Lexington destroyed the Ben Retzlaff grocery store as high winds hampered firefighting. The fire, started about 4 30 am, threatened nearby shops and the post office before being contained with limited equipment. Insurance partially covered the loss.

Sergeant Confesses Strangling WAF but Denies Rape

SAN RAFAEL Calif March 26 An autopsy showed evidence of rape in the strangling of Air Force sergeant Fairy E Decker 44. Sergeant Lyle H Buswell 32 confessed to choking her but denied rape. He is to be arraigned in San Francisco.

City Night School Enrollment Rises with 100-Student Jump

Austin Public Evening School enrollment climbs to 876 with 120 in the Negro program at Anderson High School and total registrations reaching 3 333 a rise of about 700 from last year. New sections include carpentry electrical plumbing and painting with classes 6 50 to 9 30 p m Wednesdays. A 64 hour practical nursing course may open if sufficient interest. Nude, mutilated body of kidnapped girl found in Wind River

The nude body of 18 year old Jo Ann Dewey, snatched from a Vancouver street a week earlier, was found in the Wind River forest area. Investigators say death came from crushing blows to the skull with a puncture wound AB. Three salmon fishermen discovered the body and police traced license plates to a Portland used car dealer. Clues about the two men in the car were scant as officers questioned potential witnesses and searched for connections to the Portland area.
