Case revived in agriculture funds misuse case

The state suit claiming misused funds in the Department of Agriculture was revived with a deposition hearing for J. E. McDonald and other defendants. Judge Betts authorized depositions from about 50 people to be used at trial, with hearings likely in May or June and a trial date in the 98th District Court.

Senate Knocks Down Truman Housing Plan Provision

The Senate rejected a $1 billion cooperative loan for middle income families by 43 to 38, then passed an omnibus bill authorizing about $3 billion for housing loans and insurance. Provisions include $1.75 billion FHA insurance expansion, $500 million for home modernization, $300 million for college housing, $150 million for veterans housing, and $400 million more for large rental properties. Fulbright then led elimination of a $25 million RFC authorization for prefab housing.

Last Rites Today For Mrs Pfluger In Taylor

Mrs. Augusta Pfluger 82 a German native who lived in Taylor 25 years died Wednesday. Funeral at St Pauls Lutheran Church Taylor with Rev H C Ziehe officiating. Burial in Coupland Cemetery. Pallbearers include Mrs Pflugers grandsons Carl and Emmett Pfluger. Survived by four daughters five sons two brothers and two sisters.

Acheson Warns Red China and Outlines Asian Aid

Secretary of State Dean Acheson told the Commonwealth Club that the United States would provide limited aid to Asiatic nations resisting communism. He warned Soviet imperialism seeks to pervert independence movements and cited Red China as an example, urging restraint and appropriate aid including military grants loans and technical help.

Dillard Cleared On Charges He Beat Dallasite

A six man County Court at Law jury cleared Highway Patrolman T. O. Dillard of beating Dallas truck driver Fred L. Mannis. Mannis sued for $1,000 claiming cursing and injury after a September arrest on US Highway 81 near Austin. The jury found Dillard acted within duty and Mannis cursed and kneeled him first, awarding no damages.

Thief Returns Cloaks and Cheese After Polite Fetch

In Bristol on a Wednesday night a thief left a church canteen with two tablecloths and the cheese ration. Vicar W J Jenner reported the polite suspect returned the items and apologized before police were called. The thief was released with his items returned.

Critic of Services Unification Ordered on Furlough

The Navy furloughed Captain John G. Crommelin effective April 1 after he criticized service unification. Crommelin, speaking in San Francisco, said he would comply and return to his Montgomery home, while denying plans for a court martial. He called the move an old law and defended his public remarks as part of citizens acting as a court of last resort.

Gubitchev Reneges and Goes Home to Russia

Convicted spy Valentin A Gubitchev withdrew from further appeals and said he would return to Russia next Monday. The 33 year old remained jailed as his attorney announced the 15 year sentence would be suspended if he goes back never to return. Judith Coplon, released on bond, appeals her conviction.

Dust Storm Dumps Sand Across South Plains

Strong winds over 50 mph swept topsoil across the South Plains blanketing cities from Lubbock to Dallas with a heavy dust haze. Travel became hazardous as downdrafts reduced visibility. Amari llo and Wichita Falls reported notable gusts while Abilene measured drifts and reduced visibility.
