Governor Beauford Jester endorsed an omnibus tax bill to fund expanded state services. He favored scaling HB 8 into a broader levy covering oil natural gas and sulphur to cover an estimated 80 million dollar revenue shortfall and growing state needs.
A midnight fire at the Oakland Army Base warehouse destroyed a 1000 foot pier structure packed with supplies for Okinawa and Japan. Five injuries reported minor. one civilian held for FBI questioning after found with fire-related clippings. Nine fireboats and 16 engines fought the blaze as two freighters were damaged while evacuating.
House committee appears poised to approve the Gilmer Aikin school reform program with a $200 million annual plan. Proponents offer amendments to widen the elective school board to 21 and bar unilateral district liquidation. Opponents insist on keeping Woods in an elective post and oppose abolition of the chief state school officer.
In St Paul March 15 a tax office received two letters signed X returning 100 and 90 dollars to cover prior expense account errors. The sender said the payments were to avoid publicity and pledged to be more careful in the future.
Central Texas farmers heard that the federal government cannot sustain high crop prices and unlimited production. B F Vance, Texas PMA director, told 800 Williamson County farmers at SPJST Hall of the need to limit output. Representative A Robin Henderson of Limestone County died at his Austin hotel apartment Tuesday night. A three term House member, he chaired and served on several key committees and had deep local ties. Survivors include his widow two sons two daughters and a brother. Funeral arrangements are pending with burial planned in Groesbeck.
The Texas House approved the first major appropriation for the 51st session a 2.668 million annual budget for the judiciary for Sept 1 1949 to Aug 31 1951. District judges stay at 6000 yearly appellate judges 8000 and Supreme Court judges 10000.
Nero the veteran war dog, a German Shepherd that served with American and German armies in World War II, died at about six years old from an infection after his owner Joe Gold of Ames sought veterans benefits to cover veterinary bills.
The 15 day Dixie filibuster in the Senate ended as Southern Democrats and Republicans reached a compromise plan. The motion to take up the administration curb on filibusters passed 78 to 0, clearing the way for a vote amid ongoing debate over changes to Senate rules and civil rights legislation.
The San Angelo American Legion post adopted a resolution opposing Fritz Kuhn readmission to the United States and sending it to national state and district headquarters. The measure echoes a 1946 national legion convention action. Kuhn, former Bund leader, was imprisoned in Germany and recently released seeking U S citizenship.
A House labor committee approved sending a Texas labor reform bill to a subcommittee by a 12 to 4 vote. Rep Blake Timmons said the subcommittee may be unfriendly and sought a transfer to a friendlier panel. Opponents argued the measure would repeal or weaken protections from two years ago and allow mass picketing and other restrictions. The bill would bar direct labor union political contributions but allow use of funds for political education and dissemination of candidate records.
The House passed a 15 month extension of rent controls with a home rule provision allowing states cities or counties to lift ceilings at will. The vote was 261 to 153 with 199 Democrats 61 Republicans and one American laborite in support. Administration leaders opposed the home rule amendment and efforts to limit the extension to 90 days were rejected.
Mayor Tom Miller, as dinner chair, expects 1000 to 1500 Texas Democrats at the Jefferson Jackson Day dinner in Austin March 24 at the City Coliseum. Speaker Sam Rayburn will address, with leaders from Governor Jester to Chief Justices attending, and tickets at 25 dollars.
Auc tioning of 35 head of FFA and 4 H fat steers features dry lot calf Edwin Zieschang of Thrall winning grand champion status at Williamson County Livestock Show in Georgetown. Harold Mickan Georgetown takes champion in milk fed calf and Nolin Verdon 4H earns reserve. Awards also go to Hereford cattle, lambs, and sheep with multiple local 4 H and FFA exhibitors named.
