Birth of Civil War General Hood Highlighted in Texas History
On June 29, 1831, John B Hood was born in Bath County Kentucky. Hood became a Confederate general admired by Texans, led the Fourth Texas Regiment, and lost a leg at Gettysburg before dying in New Orleans in 1879. Hood County in Texas is named for him.

Texan Faces Court On Kidnapping Custody Case
Louis B. Conley a 29 year old former Army officer from Amarillo must appear in Superior Court in October to answer kidnapping charges over his daughter and assault on his ex wife. The case advanced after the daughter was not brought to court from Amarillo and Conley remains jailed for contempt of court. He faces at least four other state and federal charges tied to the 1947 kidnapping. His mother in Amarillo refused to take Lynette to Massachusetts where the child's mother lives.

Wreck injures two in late Tuesday crash
Richard Bland Harding 22 of San Angelo and Rosemary Nolte 21 of 3208 Duval Street were hurt when their car left Webberville Road struck a culvert and plunged down a 12 foot embankment. Harding suffered a fractured jaw and lacerations while Nolte had a deep forehead cut and facial injuries. Both were reported in poor to fair condition at Brackenridge Hospital as staff investigated by Sergeant Ed Garrison and Officers Helf and Pisher.

Death reduces Texas Confederate list to 3

J D Pelphrey Succumbs In Austin Tribune Building
James D. Pelphrey 58 a Liquor Control Board agent collapsed in the Tribune Building and died at Brackenridge Hospital after a heart attack. He had served 12 years with the board and belonged to the Elks Masonic Lodge and Knights of Pythias. Raids Block Return of Table Gambling Machines in Austin
Police layered raids in Austin to halt the return of one ball marble table games. Two machines were seized Tuesday by Sergeant Bert Lay and Detective Merle Wells as investigators warned of reappearance. A complaint followed naming A L Jackson Chicks Cafe Mary Talley and Floyd Smith with permitting intermittent play. Machines will be stored at the courthouse and destroyed in 15 days.

Adopted Child Inheritance Upheld By Capitol Court
Third Civil Appeals Court on Wednesday set aside its prior ruling and upheld Annie L. Barrow Davis of Travis County as an adopted child entitled to inherit the estate of her foster father George Ann Barrow.
