Austin taxicabs will must have meters as provisions of the citys new taxi act take effect Saturday. The meter rule raises fares for short trips while longer rides stay the same. By Oct 1 cab companies face a franchise and a 2 percent monthly gross receipts tax and a taxi commission may be appointed to consider public need.
The US Weather Bureau predicts continued dry conditions near Austin with a brief period of near normal temperatures. Observations show May 26 reached 95 degrees, the warmest since January 1, while January 1 to date recorded a low of 26 degrees in early winter.
The Corpus Christi Automobile Dealers Association urged Governor Shivers to remove E. J. Amey, head of the State Highway Department motor vehicle registration division, after Amey admitted division agents violated the certificate of title act. The fight ties to an injunction suit filed by Texas auto dealer groups, set for July 10, demanding manufacturers certificates of origin be required for all new Texas registrations.

Two people remained in critical condition after a Sunday car wreck near Austin. Jerry Ruiz a 14 month old boy was listed in poor condition and Mrs Mary Regallado 28 was listed as critical.
The latest polio ward patient at Brackenridge Hospital is Rollo Gay O'Hair, 30, of Lampasas, admitted Sunday in fair condition. Two other patients, Jimmy Clark of Lampasas and Barbara Jones of Del Valle, are listed in good condition. Dwaine Lane, 12, of Elgin, was discharged Friday.
Policemen from seven Texas cities organized the Texas Municipal Police Association at a Austin meeting. Detective Joe Perry and Lt Beverly Laws were named directors, with Detective Early Maughmer of Houston elected president. The group aims to unite local police associations statewide to improve working conditions and secure civil service and salary protections.
Chevrolet led a weekly US auto output of 50 760 units with industry totals near 200 000 vehicles. The June tally reached 670 986, with forecasts of 823 000 for the month and a yearly 7 130 000 units, as major plants aim for record second half production despite potential stoppages.
The 10th Ward Civic Club will meet Tuesday at 8 p m at Metz School to discuss a low cost paving project for East Austin. President Rudy Rice says a special committee will report plus residents fronting properties would share the cost. Committee members are Hugh Reich Harold Criswell and Rev Harry Peswell. All residents and workers in the lower East Austin area are invited.
