Government economists expect unemployment to climb toward five million before stabilizing later this year or in 1950. An AP survey shows several states restoring relief laws and major cities resuming work relief programs, with claims and nonfarm payrolls fluctuating but no national crisis evident.
The United Mine Workers rejected Southern operators plans to stave off a coal strike and refused to extend the current contract until August 15. Joseph E. Moody of the Southern Coal Producers Association proposed the extension as wage talks paused for weekend negotiations. Both sides are set to resume talks Tuesday.
Governor Earl Long of Louisiana expressed optimism for a workable tidelands compromise. He said Louisiana could use its share of tidelands revenue now and believed a settlement would benefit all parties involved.
Communist authorities detained Archbishop Josef Beran under house arrest in Prague and seized church records at the archbishopric palace. Three priests were also arrested as police raided the consistory, with reports saying about 150 priests nationwide have been pressured into supporting a government Catholic action group.
County officials and employees in Travis County push for raises after a bill allows 25 percent for officials and 35 percent for staff. County Attorney Perry Jones leads the campaign saying salaries are too low while noting his own pay at 5,500 a year versus the city attorney at 7,500.

Alvin Logan of Pecos was found guilty of aggravated assault with a motor vehicle in the Ben Hogan collision case. A six man county court jury deliberated 30 minutes, fining Logan $25 for the February 2 crash that left 1948 PGA champion Hogan critically injured. Logan argued Hogan sped and denied recognizing a taxi driver who testified to speeding. Hogan said he was traveling under 20 miles per hour.
Riverside Calif June 17 The Garnier murder case involving Mrs Agnes E Garnier 53 a divorcee charged with killing wealthy employer John Wen 68 goes to an all woman superior court jury after final pleas by DA William O Mackey for second degree murder and defense attorney Sam Houston Allen for acquittal.
Judith Coplon, on trial for purloining government secrets, testifies her Justice Department superior urged her to take notes from a decoy memorandum planted by the FBI to trap her. She says Foley pressed to work on the matter over a weekend and noted AMTORG official Isi dore Needleman. The defense cites the note found in her purse and earlier FBI conduct as part of her claim of loyalty.
Chicago June 17. Ed Waitkus Philadelphia Phillies first baseman said he feels fine and hopes to play again after being shot by Ruth Steinhagen a 19 year old stranger to him. Doctors report a lung clot removed and Waitkus resting well at Masonic Hospital. Steinhagen told jail attendants she was crazy about Waitkus and dreamed of him and said she would like to see him for a thrill of murdering him.
President Soekarno and Premier Hatta said the Dutch must return them to Jakarta before any cease fire details could be worked out. The leaders spoke in a joint interview from Bangka Island where they have been held since the December Dutch action that seized Yogyakarta.
The government rested its case against Alger Hiss after 14 days of testimony. Defense motions to dismiss the perjury charges were denied. Hiss, a former State Department official, will likely testify later next week.
Hillsboro June 17 Two missing front teeth led to the capture of a boastful gate theft suspect at Waxahachie by Hill County officers. Constable Russell Goodman said the man boasted to friends that he was in a Waxahachie house. Description narrowed to a gap where two teeth were missing. Officers found three occupants who refused to give names. One man claimed he was from Mertens. he was pressed to open his mouth and confirmed the missing teeth. The man is jailed awaiting trial.
Shanghai ends nine day blockade as the Dutch steamer Meerkerk bringing 3500 tons of cargo becomes the first foreign ship to enter. Earlier the American Victory cleared for Japan and San Francisco and the British Sheng king is expected to sail later Saturday.
President Truman denounces a small group of ruthless real estate lobbyists for a propaganda campaign against public housing and slum clearance bills. He urges House support, saying the measure benefits real estate interests and the public welfare despite opposition campaigns.

Allied traffic along the westbound super high speed highway moved normally Friday while officials awaited a new Soviet move in a war of nerves after a four hour stoppage on Thursday. An American official said the stoppage may have been a mistake or a deliberate tactic.
