Rain halted plans to open the West 19th Street extension from Robbins Place to Lamar Boulevard next week. Base work was to finish next week enabling traffic on the unsurfaced street before paving. A bog in a low area from this week's rains must be drained before base excavation can start, said Noble Larson, city paving engineer.
The Travis County Courthouse will receive a new roof costing 10814 dollars. Little and Goslin Contractors expect completion next week if rain permits. The contract was let on March 8, County Judge Tom Johnson said.
A new municipal hospital advisory board will study revisions to Brackenridge expansion plans. City Manager Walter Seaholm said the board’s first task is to review changes recommended by Dr. Herman Smith and report to the City Council. Names of five appointees withheld until acceptance formalities.
A brazen thief entered four West Austin homes while residents slept and took purses and small sums. A 21 year old man was later arrested in East Austin for three burglaries in the past month, admitting the crimes. Police tied the suspect to Club Savoy and Manning's Cafe burglaries and a South Austin filling station robbery.
The Austin Chamber of Commerce has printed and distributed updated city maps. The new edition omits the old bus route overprint and adds new streets and changes. Many copies are available at no cost through the Chamber.
Seymour Washington thanks Guston Morgan and J. E. Motheral for improving Austin's sanitation division during Morgan's tenure. He recalls hauling ashes and notes equipment quality has risen. County Attorney Perry Jones reports May saw 280 bad checks investigated totaling $4 206.38. He calls it likely a office record and cites rising cases over four years. Merchants should verify IDs and addresses to curb hot checks, as some use large refunds for small items with bogus addresses.

Dexter Kinney announced the 150 foot tower at East Avenue and 19th Streets will be moved to Longfellow and Hawthorne Streets by a private contractor under city supervision. The move, expected to take several weeks, follows a council reversal after residents protested the initial plan to place the tower in Zilker Park. The tower lies on the path of the under construction Intergem Highway.
