Picking Site for San Marcos Took 40 Years
The long search for San Marcos location ends with the 1851 decision by Gen. Edward Burleson, William Lindsey, and Dr. Eli T. Merriman to lay out the town on a 640 acre tract near the San Marcos springs. Early settlers include Moon and Sessom, with Erhard’s general store making the town a trade hub before Swisher's stage line and Thompson's Island mill. The town grows as schools and churches multiply, earning the title Gateway of the Hills.
