Pittsburgh reports confirm striking miners refuse to return to work despite court orders and John L. Lewis. About 370,000 idle diggers, with 250,000 in four states, show no signs of resuming digs as unions demand a contract before production.
New York February 12 Albert Einstein warned that if the H-bomb is developed annihilation of life on earth could occur through radioactive atmospheric poisoning. He urged creation of a supra-national body and international weapon control to replace a perilous US USSR arms race.
Senator Martin of Pennsylvania praises Truman as Old Harry but says he would respect him more if he confessed errors. He cites Truman's Potsdam remark about Joe Stalin and faults his "Red herring" label for the Alger Hiss case and Acheson remarks. Martin urges accountability on Cold War issues.
Intensive ongoing search for nine missing Navy fliers from a PBM5 overdue since Friday. Seventeen planes from Corpus Christi, Ellington Field, and a Coast Guard unit comb the Gulf of Mexico, aided by three surface cutters Nike Iris and another vessel.
Sigmund Engel, 74, imprisoned for defrauding a Chicago widow, is teaching German in Stateville Prison's language class. He received a two to 10 year sentence and has a 50-year reputation as a swindler who used many aliases. He told authorities he speaks 15 languages.

A noon-time ride through Rock Springs Park ends with the horse electrocuted after stepping on a live wire. Rider Ronnie Gaither 15 escaped unharmed apart from a brief shock while aiding the horse. Mrs Olan Gaither confirms the injuries were minor to the boy.
The East German government announced a plan to build a nationwide master file recording each citizen’s full political history. The index aims to identify party memberships and past beliefs to purge “unreliables” and monitor opposition. The measure follows a wartime questionnaire and targets all parties from SPD to NSDAP.
Murray Goldberg, visiting his separated wife Estelle and their one year old son Kenneth at the Bronx Children's Shelter, fired five shots fatally wounding his wife and killing the boy. He fled after ordering shelter staffer Raymond Craighton to come with him. a second revolver was later found.

Ali Khalid director general of Iraq police attempted to overthrow the government but was arrested within two hours with no bloodshed. A communique said his movement was foiled and he had no support from his forces as a new cabinet headed by Seyyyid Tawfik Al Suwaidi was formed after the recent government fall.
In Springfield Illinois from February 12 to 14 a Lincoln birthday homage centered on the tomb in Oak Ridge Cemetery. American Legion officials led wreaths and speeches praising Lincoln against totalitarian ideologies. George N Craig urged action against traitors, while Governor Adlai Stevenson stressed perseverance for liberty and justice.

Tornadoes battered Northwest Louisiana East Texas and southern Arkansas Sunday killing 39 people. Louisiana suffered 34 deaths with eight in East Texas. Across states nearly 100 injured in each Texas and Louisiana. homes and buildings destroyed. The Shreveport Times lists casualties by town including Forbing Slack Air Force Base and Castor area. Witness accounts describe a rolling black tornado with extensive damage and a child crushed by a collapsed fireplace. Continues on page 2.
The Texas House opens debate on tax bills to fund hospital operations and the seven year hospital building program during the 30 day special session. Bills include a 1k month levy increase and a cigarette tax rise with other measures under review. A Senate approved deficiency appropriation and hospital program funding are also on the agenda. Dr J W Edgar is set for a confirmation hearing as Texas education commissioner.

A small plane carrying classified atomic information crashed five miles west of Albuquerque. Inspectors Warren Fleshman and Robert Purcell and pilot Hugh Williams Jr. died. The Beechcraft from Carco Flying Service was under contract to the Atomic Energy Commission and no atomic material was aboard.
An early morning downpour in Austin flooded unpaved streets in South Austin and caused washouts. City crews and the Fire Department battled water in Brackenridge Hospital and the Commodore Perry Hotel elevator shaft, while Enfield Road and Boggy Creek crossings were closed until cleared.
