Truman Pins Isolationism Label on Hoover Policy Speech

President Truman labeled Hoover’s call to end aid to Europe and bolster defense as isolationism and vowed the country will not return to isolationism. He spoke in Washington about Hoover’s New York speech and answered questions on Korea, Madrid envoy, wage and price controls, and the State of the Union timing.

Conferees Reach Accord for Civil Defense Measure

Washington December 28 conferees agreed on civil defense legislation to enable shelters and defense steps. The compromise bill goes to the House Monday and Senate Tuesday with broad support, and would authorize a large program without appropriations. The measure vests sweeping powers in Civil Defense Administrator Millard Caldwell Jr and could enable rapid action in emergencies. Caldwell said radar warning would make a surprise attack nearly impossible.

Burial of Walker Set in Arlington

Lieutenant General Walton H. Walker commander of the Eighth Army who died in a Korea jeep crash will be buried at Arlington Cemetery next Tuesday. His body lies at Fort Myer chapel from 8 am to 2 pm with services. the aircraft delivering his body arrives Saturday night. On the plane with his widow and son Captain Sam Walker travel Master Sergeant Walter Reynolds. Honorary pallbearers include Defense Secretary Marshall General Dwight Eisenhower and General Omar Bradley.

Myron G Blalock 59 former Texas Democratic Party chairman and national committeeman dies of a heart attack in Marshall. His funeral is set for 3 p m Friday at First Methodist Church with six brothers as pallbearers. A longtime stabilizing force in state politics, Blalock served in the Texas House, led the state party, and held Army service roles.

Natural Rubber Supply Seized and Banking Controls Expanded

The Federal Reserve Board raised reserve requirements to curb inflation and limit lending. The National Production Authority ordered sole import control of natural rubber via General Services Administrator Jess Larson. Hoarding of 55 essential materials, including steel and lumber, was banned under the Defense Production Act to bolster defense and civilian production.

80 000 Called For Draft Medics Register Jan 15

The Army plans 80 000 draftees in March, boosting total draft quotas to 450 000 since Korea. January 15 registers 210 000 doctors dentists and veterinarians under 50 in priorities three and four. Navy Air Force Marines no draft calls. An Army expansion to about 3.5 million troops aims for 24 combat divisions by next July. two guard divisions join next month. Korea War Casualties Reach 38325 Total

The total announced casualties in the Korean War reached 38 325 through Dec 22, an increase of 1 904 from a week earlier. Dead total 6 432 including 5 742 KIA and 684 died of wounds. Wounded 27 012. Missing 5 571 since start, with 4 753 listed on Dec 22. Some figures reflect lag in notifications and transfers.

Three Men Injured In Childress Filling Station Blast

Three men were hurt Thursday when an air cen scene exploded at a Childress filling station spraying debris over 300 yards. Ed Fite owner Langford and Gene Holman were injured. Langford suffered a deep leg cut while Holman was in serious condition with a fractured skull broken nose and fractured sinus region. The building was wrecked and Holman was taken to a local hospital.

French Yield Two Posts to Vietminh

Vietminh shock troops drove the French from two posts in the Chaucon Monay defense line below the Chinese frontier and attacked again near Hanoi. A French spokesman said a big new offensive by the Communist-led rebels may have begun. Chauson fell, shrinking the frontier line and casualties were reported light.

Freeze Persists but Rain Remains Elusive in Central Texas

The Austin Weather Bureau forecasts a 28 degree low and 60 high with no rain for Central Texas as a cold snap lingers. Temperatures will dip into the upper 30s by Saturday while valley areas may see colder readings. The Midwest warms as seven deaths are linked to the cold, including a two month old in Orange, Texas.
