National Sales Tax for Defense Doubtful, Exchange Club Told

Houston accountant George Lafferty told the Austin Exchange Club that a national sales tax for defense is unlikely this time. He cited state and local allocation, plus exemptions on necessities, as complicating factors, and outlined four funding options for defense. He argued increased taxes remain the best revenue method, noting most income tax comes from those earning $5 000 or less.

Fairfield Farmer Killed in Truck Wagon Collision

Frank Kent 72 a local farmer was killed instantly Tuesday night when his wagon collided with a pickup truck four miles northeast of Fairfield Texas near the Kent home. His five year old grandson John Kent was injured. The pickup was driven by Clarence Karl Fuller Jr of Greggton an employee of Stanolind Oil Company.

Joys Flowers Opens Near Austin High School

Joys Flowers at 807 West 12th Street near Austin High School opens with Joy and Tex Nehring and Mrs B C Davis as owners. Davis brings 15 years in local floral work and teaches design. Nehring managed a flower shop. The shop features pink and silver decor, a 10 by 10 refrigeration unit, free delivery, and a range of cut flowers, potted plants, and gifts with Christmas specials.

Dallas police reported 1941 Ford coupe stolen at about 11 p.m. and a apartment fire caused by the incident inflicted an estimated $7,000 in damage. No injuries were reported.

Sheriff Probes Wide Theft ring at dock and home

Deputies investigate thefts from a boat dock and a private residence. FE. M. Greathouse reports a sanding machine and a quarter inch drill missing from his Route 7 address near Marshall Ford Dam. Willie Sequintos states a table model clock radio was taken from his Route 5 home.

Cattleman Dies In Car Mishap on Highway 20

A Center cattleman died Wednesday afternoon six miles east of Austin when his vehicle left the road for 450 feet, returned to the roadway, and rolled over 80 feet. Investigator Booth of LaGrange said Booth likely died before the rollover.
