Port Houses Idle In Home Scarcity
ORANGE Aug 17 A housing shortage and a growing unemployment issue hit the port city amid a wartime boom. A survey found only 11 vacant dwellings for families with children, about 25 other units for childless families, while several hundred government owned homes stood vacant. The Texas Employment Commission reported 400 new job applications in the first half of August, with 1215 unemployed on the rolls, the highest in months. TEC manager L A Hammond cited rumors of war contracts and warned residents to seek jobs and housing before moving to Orange. He noted new jobs tied to Navy and war efforts but said openings are filled from locals and urged no move without a sure job.
