The second annual Home and Trade Show at City Coliseum drew thousands of Austinites on Friday night to seek free items from local merchants. Attendees grabbed biscuits, glasses, chili spread, fertilizer, and more, while contests and demonstrations entertained visitors.
Byron Tinsley of Greenville called for withdrawal of the Longoria reburial investigation report. Four of five House members endorsed the majority finding no racial discrimination in the reburial for the Luzon fallen Latin American soldier, while Frank Oltorf dissented. A Three Rivers hearing heard claims of disagreements over chapel use and remarks by the undertaker.
The Texas legislature faces a deadlock over the Gilmer Aikin school plan. Representative Crosthwait of Dallas proposes a conference with Governor Beaufort Jester to spur action and set a special session to push the GA reform, with about 20 members from each side to participate.
The Senate approved a $5.58 billion program to aid Europe’s recovery over 15 months by a 70 to 7 vote. The measure authorizes spending across three months and the following year, with actual cash outlays to be set by appropriations. The House plans a quick path to action.
In Washington on April 8 the Senate opened a clash over tidelands ownership with McCarran introducing a bill to vest title in the states. Tobey vowed to kill the measure, citing a feared clash with a 1947 Supreme Court ruling granting federal paramount rights. Texas Attorney General Price Daniel supported the bill saying it protects state boundaries and three mile coastal limits. The case against Texas is set for April 18.
In New York April 8 a federal court hearing heard a volunteer FBI informant name MIT mathematician Dirk J. Struik as a discussion leader in a Communist Party professional group in the Boston area. Struik denied advocating overthrow and said he was a Marxist in a broad sense.
The United States Britain and France agreed to abolish military rule in the Western zones of Germany and replace military governors with civilian high commissioners while keeping an occupation force. The shift aims to unite Western Europe and boost hopes for settlement with Russia amid Cold War tensions.
Martin Dies former congressman and head of the Dies committee told a Rotary Club in San Antonio that the US government knows Russia has had the atomic bomb secret for more than two years. He cautioned that those who think the nation is safe from atomic weapons are mistaken and argued communism cannot be defeated by war alone.
A nurse in a Far North Labrador hamlet urged help to avert starvation of 100 winterbound fisherfolk. Miss Jupp said babies are being fed on flour, water and molasses water.
Fort Worth police radio reported a dog bite in the 4400 block on Bonita Drive. Officer A W Kohles investigated and was bitten by the same dog, receiving hospital treatment. The dog's owner received a ticket.
Ireland’s external affairs minister Sean McBride said Ireland would join the North Atlantic Pact immediately once partition is settled. He planned talks with Dean Acheson in Washington and travels to Los Angeles San Francisco and Boston to discuss Irish British relations.
In Hot Springs New Mexico on April 8 the state Land Commissioner invited famed Southwest historian J Frank Dobie to join a search for a rumored cave filled with gold bars and jewels. A cold wind began to whistle from a tunnel that may lead to the treasure.
A three year old girl fell into a 120 foot dry well pipe 14 inches wide in San Marino California. Rescue teams including circus performers jockeys and a radio midget were brought in as officials debated entry methods and air supply. The child cried briefly and then fell silent as efforts continued into night.
