A herd of elephants stampeded through a wooded ravine near Gonzales after gunfire by Texas cowboys. They wrecked a porch and fence, charged a highway, and later returned to Dailey Brothers Circus quarters. Two handlers were slightly injured. Rex William led the herd. camera man Lee Orr recorded the event. Lucy the elephant, 46, Butch 3, and Texas did not join the stampede.
A House state affairs committee hearing will consider a bill requiring UT and state college students to sign loyalty affidavits denying Communist affiliation. The measure, backed by Moore and Crosthwait, would expel admitted Communists and disloyal students, tied to a pending general law and governor Beauford Jester’s stance.
Reports from Athens say new Communist incursions into Albania sparked unprecedented violence. Guerrillas reportedly seized four border villages and five mountain heights, but all heights were recaptured. Assimorhori on the border was also forced from by government forces.
SAN MARCOS April 5 Frank Zimmerman was elected mayor of San Marcos by nearly two to one over incumbent Norman Jackson. Zimmerman led with 932 votes to Jackson 469 and Edwin Waller 3. This marks Zimmerman's first foray into politics. Jackson begins his second term.

One man died and two others were seriously injured in an automobile collision one mile east of Bastrop at 3 a.m. Robert F. Rickett of Houston, 34, was killed. Survivors include Alfred Hoffman of Smithville and Jack Bishop of Kansas City, both injured. The injury drivers were transported to local hospitals and the body sent to Houston. The two cars collided head on near a curve. Both victims were Kawneer Company salesmen.
Secretary of State Acheson vowed full American support for the United Nations at the opening of the UN Assembly spring session in New York. He and other NATO signers expressed unity as Miss Margaret Truman attended, while Gromyko met with diplomats amid expectations of a Soviet stance. The assembly planned to tackle Italy’s colonies, Franco Spain, and India’s protest in South Africa.
A Tuesday night fire at Leon's Shoe Store 618 Congress Avenue caused an estimated 25 000 to 30 000 in stock loss. The blaze started on the north side of the building and spread through shoebox rows. Top floor storeroom damage was extensive while ground floor stock remained intact. Traffic delays occurred as crews fought the fire for over an hour.
Effingham Ill reports 65 dead or missing as St Anthony's Hospital burns after a midnight blaze. A nurse and nurse’s rescue attempts, eight newborn corpses, and a pregnant mother delivering a baby in a window are described along with hospital staff efforts and aid responses.
Northern Utah and southeastern Idaho residents reported a dramatic meteor described as a ball of fire with explosions and smoke puffs over Trenton Lewiston and surrounding areas. Civil Aeronautics Administration observers at Salt Lake Airport sighted the fireball at 9 55 a m and said it burned out before reaching the ground.
