Drowned man Powell among Ohio river workers

A young man named Powell, employed on the Ohio and Mississippi Railroad bridge at this place, was drowned Wednesday night when a skiff capsized during river crossing. He struggled as his oar freed from the lock and sank. Two other workers swam ashore. one tried to aid Powell but failed. Powell's family lives in Manchester, Dearborn County, Indiana.

Cuban Expedi tion failure hits Quitman plan hard

A New York Tribune correspondent reports from Natchezridge on April 12 that the Quitman Cuban expedition has failed after about a million dollars spent on steamers arms and powder. The Magnolia wreck remains hidden after paying wreckers to stay silent as Gen Quitmen’s health falters amid the debacle. Cholera also exists among Jefferson Barracks recruits with about seventy cases and fourteen deaths though overall sanitary measures are praised.

The New Orleans Bee's Mexico correspondent says Santa Anna is gravely ill with a head disease and in a state of stupor. They note worsened conditions from southern dispatches and fear he may not recover.

Married in Wilmington on the sixth by Rev. John W. Haught of New Haven Ohio to Miss Mary H Nicholson of Wilmington. In Lawrenceburgh last week Wednesday, Lemuel Bigney wed Miss Sarah Van Doren, both residents of the county.
